Will India pick Mayank Yadav in T20 World Cup: Mayank Yadav is the hottest topic right now among cricket fans and experts. He’s played only two matches, but the youngster has already made a strong case to be fast-tracked into India’s plans for the T20 World Cup in June.
It isn’t his six wickets in two games that are the focal point, but his searing pace and, even more impressively, his control on his lines and lengths that’ve got everyone excited. So much so that former SRH coach Tom Moody strongly feels Mayank should be on the plane to the USA and West Indies for the T20 World Cup.
On his debut for the Lucknow Super Giants, the 21-year-old picked 3/27 against the Punjab Kings and recorded a high speed of 155.8 KPH, the then fastest ball of the IPL 2024 season.
He produced an even better performance against RCB at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, returning with figures of 3/14. His wickets were Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, and Rajat Patidar, all three good players of pace bowling, but all were beaten with pace and bounce. He broke his own speed record by clocking 156.7 KPH.
Speaking with ESPNcricinfo, Tom Moody, who coached SRH to the IPL 2016 trophy, said that Mayank has the skillset to bowl in all three phases of the game, which puts him in good stead as far as selection for the T20 World Cup goes.
Tom Moody opined:
“He is definitely in the conversation. Whether you take that risk punting on him or not is another conversation because you also need to consider what skillset you need in that reserve fast bowler – is it someone who is a powerplay bowler, or someone who has the ability to bowl at the death, all those subtle skillsets are important when you are talking about a T20 World Cup.”

Former New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan, who won multiple IPL trophies with the Mumbai Indians, concurred with Moody. McClenaghan said that “it would be crazy” to overlook Mayank’s form and his extreme pace only because he hasn’t played international cricket yet. McClenaghan admits it’s still a long shot, but something worth pondering strongly for the BCCI selectors and Indian team management.
“If his form continues throughout this tournament, I think it would be crazy not to look at the players who are in form going into that tournament,” McClenaghan said.
“He may not have the caps behind him, but if he continues this vein of form and can keep his pace up throughout the whole tournament and keep winning games, then you are right in the mix. Long shot but you wouldn’t say never.”
