Will Harry Brook be banned by the BCCI from IPL: England’s rising star Harry Brook is all but certain to be banned by the BCCI for the next two IPL seasons after he pulled out of the upcoming IPL 2025 tournament despite having been bought by the Delhi Capitals and not suffering any injury.
This is the second consecutive season that Brook has pulled out of the IPL. Last year, he opted out of the 2024 edition following the demise of his grandmother; prior to the IPL 2024, Brook also pulled out from England’s five-match Test series in India as his grandmother had passed away.
Why will Harry Brook not play in IPL 2025?
At the IPL 2025 mega auction, the 26-year-old Brook was bought by Delhi for INR 6.25 crore (£590,000). On March 9, though, Brook posted a message on social media, confirming his non-participation in IPL 2025, saying that he needs “time to recharge” ahead of a busy international season for England, which includes a five-match home Test series against India immediately after the IPL and the Ashes in Australia later in the year.
“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL,” Brook tweeted. “I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy, I have dreamt of playing for my country, and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level.
“With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision. It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date. I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right, and playing for my country remains my priority and focus. I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I receive.”
Will Harry Brook be banned by the BCCI from IPL?
As Brook has pulled out of the IPL after being bought in the auction by DC, he is in line to be banned for the next two IPL seasons, according to the new rule placed by the BCCI for overseas players. The BCCI had stated in their new rule, “Any [overseas] player who registers for [an] auction and, after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the IPL/IPL auction for two seasons.”
The only exception would be “an injury/medical condition, which will have to be confirmed by the [player’s] home board.” Since Brook has pulled out for non-injury reasons, he is set to be banned from the IPL for two years.
Delhi have not yet announced Brook’s replacement. The IPL 2025 will kick off on March 22.
Brook played in IPL 2023 for SRH, where he scored 190 runs in 11 matches, with the major chunk of his runs coming in one game—he scored 100* against KKR in Eden Gardens and flopped in the rest of his innings.
