Why Will KL Rahul Not Play Today Against LSG: Delhi Capitals will have to take the field today in their first IPL 2025 match, against Lucknow Super Giants in Vizag, without one of their key signings: KL Rahul.
DC and LSG will kick off their respective IPL 2025 campaigns on Monday at the Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
Both teams had failed to reach the playoffs last season, and now both are being led by new skippers, having released their captains from last season.
LSG, who were led by Rahul in the last three seasons, will now be captained by Rishabh Pant, who is the most expensive IPL player in history, with LSG splurging INR 27 crore on the keeper-batsman in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
While Pant, who was Delhi’s skipper until last season, is now LSG’s captain, DC roped in LSG’s former skipper Rahul but he is not their new skipper, with all-rounder Axar Patel being given the leadership duties in the presence of Rahul and Faf du Plessis, the former RCB captain.
DC vs LSG: Why Will KL Rahul Not Play Today Against LSG?
KL Rahul will not play today against LSG because he reportedly rushed to his home in Mumbai on Sunday night after learning that his wife, Athiya Shetty, could give birth to their first child at any moment. Rahul had been granted permission by the DC management to miss their season opener against Lucknow, as he is expecting his first child soon.
Rahul is expected to return and play in DC’s next game, which is on March 30 against SRH.
“He has returned home to be with his wife, as the baby is expected any time. However, he is certain to be available for the team’s next game,” said a family friend of Rahul, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Recently, KL Rahul played a crucial role in India’s ICC Champions Trophy victory in Dubai. Batting in the middle-order, the right-hander scored 140 runs in four innings, while remaining not out thrice, at a strike rate of 97.
Showing incredible calmness, Rahul deliveried in high-pressure run-chases and in nervy moments in the semi-final against Australia and final against New Zealand with scores of 42* and 34* respectively, seeing off both run chases successfully.
