Why Mumbai Indians have failed in IPL 2024: Five-time champions Mumbai Indians are having one of their worst IPL seasons ever and are placed 9th in the points table. With only three wins in 10 matches, Hardik Pandya’s side is all but out of the playoff race, and would need a miracle of astronomical proportions to turn around their campaign and finish in the top four.
MI started the season with three consecutive losses before registering two back-to-back wins. However, they then won only one out of five matches.
It’s interesting that they have underperformed heavily this season despite having a stronger bowling unit compared to last year, when they reached the Eliminator even in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
What is ailing Mumbai Indians this season? What are the biggest reasons for their downfall in IPL 2024?
Why Mumbai Indians have failed in IPL 2024?
Misfiring top order
A misfiring top-order has hurt Mumbai Indians this season. Collective batting failures from Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav seem to be their biggest drawback in IPL 2024 so far. Although Rohit has decent numbers (average of 35, strike rate of 158), he hasn’t been able to bat for long barring one century, which, too, came in a losing cause.
Ishan is averaging 24 and Suryakumar 25. Like Rohit, both of them have healthy strike rates, but in a record-breaking run-scoring season, they needed to win matches on their own.
MI have lost 19 wickets in the powerplay, which is the second-most so far among the 10 teams.

Lack of wickets for spinners; no support for Bumrah from pacers
Last year, Piyush Chawla had an unexpectedly good season. However, he couldn’t replicate that form this year, and he’s managed only 4 wickets in 7 matches. Shreyas Gopal picked up three wickets in three outings and leaked more than 9.5 runs an over. Nabi has taken two wickets in the six times he’s bowled.
Further, barring Coetzee, who has also been expensive, no other pacer has been able to give support to Bumrah, who is bowling on a level of his own.
The change in captaincy seems to have affected the dressing room
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that things weren’t all well in the “One Family” as Hardik took over the captaincy from Rohit. Rumors of the rift within the camp splurged almost daily, and the boos from different crowds toward Hardik made matters worse for the all-rounder. Hardik has also been disastrous as a captain with his bowling changes; his usage of Bumrah and his own overs have baffled most.
Hardik’s comments in MI’s last two losses, including blaming youngster Tilak Varma after the loss vs SRH, haven’t sat down well with the fans either.
