Why is Rishabh Pant suspended vs RCB: In a major dent to the Delhi Capitals, their captain, Rishabh Pant, has been suspended for one match and will miss DC’s next game, which is against RCB on May 12, Sunday, at Chinnaswamy Stadium. This news was confirmed by the IPL and BCCI on Saturday.
At the moment, the Delhi Capitals are placed in the middle of the points table, in fifth place with six wins and six losses. Their remaining two matches are against RCB and the Lucknow Super Giants. Their skipper, Rishabh Pant, will be on the bench for the match against RCB in Bangalore due to being suspended for a slow-over rate.
Why is Rishabh Pant Suspended vs RCB?
Rishabh Pant was suspended due to a slow-over rate offense against the Rajasthan Royals on May 7, along with being fined INR 30 lakhs. This was Pant and Delhi’s third slow-over rate penalty this season, and thus the DC captain was suspended for one match, against RCB on May 12.
The rest of the members of the playing XI and the Impact Player have been fined INR 12 lakhs, or 50 percent of their match fees, whichever is lesser.
The Delhi Capitals protested and filed an appeal with the BCCI. However, it was slashed down.
The BCCI said in their statement,
“As per Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Delhi Capitals filed an appeal challenging the ruling of the Match Referee. Following this, the appeal was referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for review. The Ombudsman conducted a virtual hearing and affirmed that the decision of the Match Referee remains final and binding.”
It has been learned that the Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly, head coach Ricky Ponting, and CEO Sunil Gupta attended the virtual hearing. DC gave multiple reasons for the delay, citing the 13 sixes that RR hit and the halt in the game when Sanju Samson had an argument with the umpires due to his controversial dismissal. But the BCCI Ombudsman didn’t get swayed by DC’s reasons.
According to the IPL rules, a team is allowed 85 minutes to complete their 20 overs. But Delhi took 117 minutes to complete their 20 overs against RR, and thus Pant copped the fine and sanction of a one-match suspension.
Rishabh Pant is the leading run-scorer for DC so far this season, with 413 runs in 12 innings at an average of 41 and a strike rate of 156. He’s cracked three half-centuries in the tournament, in which he made a return from a long injury layoff that had been forced due to a car accident. Due to his impressive performances with the bat and with the gloves, Pant was picked up in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
