But no footballer has made a splash in recent years quite like Swedish attacker Viktor Gyokeres, who plays for Sporting CP in the Portuguese League and is connected to big-money moves across Europe. So exactly who is he?
Who Is Viktor Gyokeres?
Gyokeres is a 26-year-old Swedish striker who currently plays for Sporting Lisbon. Signed by the Portuguese giants in 2023, he previously played for Premier League side Brighton and Championship side Coventry City.
Ever since signing with Sporting for 21 million Euros, he has been the best attacker not only in the team but in the whole of Europe. In his first season at the club, he scored 29 league goals in 33 games, winning the Golden Boot.
But in the ongoing 2024/25 season, Viktor might have found the form of his life. In 10 league games so far, he has scored a whopping 16 games. This has played a major role in the Lisbon-based club winning all their Liga Portugal matches so far.
But more impressively, he has been shining in the UEFA Champions League. In the four matches in the league so far, he has scored five goals. This includes a fantastic hat-trick he scored against Manchester City.
After City’s Phil Foden opened the scoring in the fourth minute, the underdogs took over and dominated the attack for the whole game. It was Gyokeres who equalized in the 38th minute. Then, after the break, Maximiliano Aruajo immediately gave Sporting the lead.
In the 49th minute, Francisco Trincao won a penalty that Viktor converted. Erling Haaland failed to convert a penalty later in the match. Then, in the 80th minute, Sporting Lisbon won another penalty that Viktor Gtokeres scored to score his first hat-trick in European football. The defending Portuguese league champions defeated Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, considered the best team in the world, 4-1.
But what is next for Gyokeres? It is obvious that he will soon transfer to one of the bigger clubs in Europe. He is being lined up with several English and Spanish clubs, including Arsenal, Barcelona, Liverpool, and Chelsea.
But the strongest links he has so far are with Manchester United. The English giants are having a dismal season so far, as they are currently 13th in the Premier League. This resulted in their manager Erik Ten Hag getting fired. Currently, club legend Ruud van Nistlerooy has taken over as interim manager.
However, the club has signed a new deal with Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, the man who won multiple league titles with the club and the one who signed Gyokeres to his club.
Now, when a manager moves from a smaller club to a big club, they tend to take some of the players with them, like how Ten Hag brought Antony from Ajax with him. So it is highly likely that Amorim will come to United and will look to sign Viktor Gyokeres as his first major signing.
Sporting does have a deep history with Manchester United. A few years ago, the English side signed their current captain Bruno Fernandes from the Portuguese club. But the most iconic transfer between the two teams was in 2004, when United signed a young Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting, and the rest is history.
