Who Is Vignesh Puthur: The Mumbai Indians took on the Chennai Super Kings in Match 3 of IPL 2025 in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. While it was the home team that won the match, one MI player impressed all those who watched the match, and that was left-arm wrist-spinner Vignesh Puthur, who bowled a fine spell of 3/32 in four overs.
Who Is Vignesh Puthur?
But who is Vignesh Puthur, the man who dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube at their home ground? The 24-year-old leggie from Malappuram, Kerala, was bought by the five-time IPL champions for Rs. 30 lakh in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Despite being 24 years of age, Puthur has yet to play senior domestic cricket for his state, Kerala. Instead, having only played at the U-14 and U-19 levels. He has played a few matches in the Kerala Cricket League, where he took two wickets in three games for the Alleppey Ripples. He also played a season in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), in which he took nine wickets in 10 games.
His only experience at the top level of professional cricket is his one match in the IPL, in which he took three big wickets after being brought in as an Impact Player.
His selection for the Ripples in the KCL came on the back of his consistent performances for the Jolly Rovers Cricket Club, a local cricket club in Malappuram.

Early in his cricketing days, Vignesh Puthur was a medium-pace bowler. He was then asked by one of his coaches to try out leg spin, at which point he stood out for being one of the very few left-arm wrist spinners in his local area.
With his impressive showing in the KCL, he came onto the radar of the Mumbai Indians, who picked him up in the auction after a few net sessions at one of the team training camps. He was also sent to South Africa to be a net bowler for MI Cape Town in the SA20.
Puthur will now be one of the players to watch out for in IPL 2025. He will most likely feature in MI’s next match, which will be on Saturday, March 29, against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
