Who is the new England ODI captain? England captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Australia. After the completion of the three-match T20I series, England will host Australia for a five-match ODI series, which will run from September 19 to 29.
This series will help both teams in their preparations for the Champions Trophy 2025, which is scheduled to be played in February-March next year in Pakistan.
Buttler has been out of action since England’s semi-final exit at the T20 World Cup in June due to a calf injury. He was initially ruled out of The Hundred and had targeted his return in the T20 Blast quarterfinals but got injured again while training.
He then missed the T20I series against Australia, where opener Phil Salt led the Three Lions. Buttler is now ruled out of the five-ODI series as well and is expected to make his return on November’s Caribbean tour.
Who is the new England ODI captain for the series against Australia?
With Jos Buttler ruled out of the five-match ODI series against Australia, England have named batsman Harry Brook as their skipper. This will be the first time that Brook will be leading the senior England men’s side. England have named Liam Livingstone as Buttler’s replacement in the squad.
Brook recently was the vice-captain of England in the Test series against Sri Lanka at home. Brook captained England in the under-19 World Cup in 2018. He has led Yorkshire in the T20 blast in 2022 and captained the Northern Superchargers in the Hundred earlier this year.
Livingstone had originally been dropped from the ODI side, but impressive all-round performances in the first two T20Is against Australia earned him a recall in the ODI setup. In two outings, Livingstone hammered 124 runs off 74 balls and picked up five wickets in six overs.
Meanwhile, England have also confirmed that fast bowler Josh Hull has been withdrawn from the ODI series as a precautionary measure after he sustained a minor quad injury on his Test debut at The Oval against Sri Lanka. A team spokesperson confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that his withdrawal is only precautionary and his participation in October’s Test tour to Pakistan is not under any threat.
