Which Team Has Won The Most Copa America Titles: We are just days away from the final of Copa America 2024. The game between Argentina and Columbia will decide the 48th winner of the competition and the champion of football in the Americas.
Having started all the way back in 1916, Copa America is the oldest international football tournament. Eight nations have won this competition so far. Let’s look at which teams have won the tournament and which team has won the most.
Which Team Has Won The Most Copa America Titles
The best place to start is the most recent edition of the tournament, the 2021 Copa America took place in Brazil and saw one of the biggest fixtures in world football as the final as Argentina took on Brazil. It was Lionel Messi’s Argentina that prevailed that night.
Not only was that the Argentine’s first Copa America title since 1993, but that win also meant that the football giants had won their 15th title in this competition, which is the joint most wins in Copa America history.
Winning 15 out of 47 times in a competition is impressive, but there is another nation that has done this, that being Uruguay.
Uruguay won the first-ever Copa America in 1916. In fact, the nation won the first two editions of the tournament, triumphing in 2017 as well. Their most recent win in this competition came in 2011, a tournament that saw the rise of a young Luis Suarez, who was named the Player of the Tournament.
Copa America 2024 is only the second time that teams from the entire Americas, that being North and South America, are playing in the competition. While teams from North America have previously been invited to Copa America, it was only in 2016 that six teams from CONCACAF (North American Football Federation) qualified. Otherwise, this is just a competition for the 10 CONMEBOL (South American Football Federation) teams.
With Argentina and Uruguay winning 15 Copa America titles each, the team with the third-most title wins is Brazil, who has won the competition on nine occasions. The most recent of these wins came in 2019. That tournament saw two teams from Asia – Japan and Qatar, being invited.
Paraguay, Chile, and Peru have the fourth-most titles with two wins each. While Paraguay and Peru’s last wins came in the 1970s, Chile won their two titles in 2015 and 2016, the second being a special edition of the competition celebrating its 100-year anniversary.
That leaves Bolivia and Columbia, who have won the competition once each, in 1963 and 2001 respectively. Columbia has the chance to pick up their second Copa America win as they take on Argentina in the final.
The only team that has made it to the final of Copa America but has not won it is Mexico, who made it to the final in 1993 and 2001.
The Argentina vs Columbia final of Copa America 2024, which will be played in Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Monday, June 15, at 5:30 a.m. (IST), will provide a shot at history to the Argentine side, which can win their 16th Copa America title and surpass Uruguay with the most wins.
