Which Team Finished Last In IPL Each Season?
The inaugural season of the Indian Premier League took place in 2008. The tournament that changed cricket as we know it was won by the Rajasthan Royals. While most fans remember that, far fewer people know who finished last in that right team tournament. The team with only two wins and 12 losses in 14 games was the VVS Laxman-led Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad.
In an incredible turnaround, the Chargers won the league in 2009. And the team that finished at the bottom of the table was the Kolkata Knight Riders with three wins, 10 losses, and seven points. In the third season of the league in 2010, the Kings XI Punjab (now the Punjab Kings) finished last with four wins, 10 losses, and eight points.
The IPL expanded to 10 teams in 2011, with Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala joining the league. And in the first-ever 10-team season of the Indian Premier League, it was the Delhi Daredevils (now the Delhi Capitals) that finished at the bottom with four wins, nine losses, and nine points in 14 matches.
In 2012, the team count fell to nine, as the Kochi Tuskers were dismantled. However, each team now played 16 league games. This season, it was the Pune Warriors India that finished with the wooden spoon. four wins, 12 losses, and eight points. In 2013, the Sunrisers Hyderabad replaced the Deccan Chargers, so the number of teams remained nine. In what was the sixth season of the Indian Premier League, DC finished ninth with three wins, 13 losses, and six points. This is the most losses by any team in one IPL season.

We were back down to eight teams in 2014, as PWI withdrew from the league. And again, the Daredevils finished at the bottom with two wins, 12 losses, and four points. No wonder this team changed their name a few seasons later. In 2015, last season’s finalists, Kings XI Punjab, crashed hard and finished eighth with three wins, 11 losses, and six points.
In 2016, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals started their two-season ban. So their places were taken by Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions. But it was again the 11 kings from Punjab who finished at the bottom of the table with four wins, 10 losses, and eight points. And unsurprisingly, this team changed their name a few seasons later too.
2017 saw, for the first time, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru finish last. This came after they reached the final in 2016 and almost won the league. But in the 10th season of the IPL, RCB finished with three wins, 10 losses and seven points.
In 2018, CSK and RR, in place of RPS and GL, returned to the league and immediately made it to the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Delhi Daredevils finished at the bottom once again with five wins, nine losses, and 10 points. This was also this team’s last year with that name, as they became the Delhi Capitals in 2019.
Speaking of 2019, the Royal Challengers finished last for a second season in a row with five wins, eight losses, and 11 points. In 2020, continuing the royal motif of this list, it was the Rajasthan Royals who finished last with six wins, eight losses, and 12 points. This is the highest points tally for an IPL team that finished at the bottom of the table at the end of a season.
2021 saw the Sunrisers Hyderabad finish with the wooden spoon for the first time in franchise history. They ended this season with three wins, 11 losses, and six points.
In 2022, two more teams joined the league, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, bringing the number of teams in the Indian Premier League back to 10. And while both new teams made it to the playoffs this season, five-time champions Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom this time around with four wins, 10 losses, and eight points.
In 2023, the Sunrisers Hyderabad finished last for the second time in three seasons with four wins, 10 losses, and eight points. And then in 2024, the Mumbai Indians finished 10th for the second time in three seasons.
And now, in 2025, it is the Chennai Super Kings that have finished at the bottom of the table with four wins, 10 losses, and eight points. This is the first time in franchise history that they have finished last.
It is the franchise formerly known as the Delhi Daredevils that has ended a season with the wooden spoon the most times, a whopping four times. The Punjab Kings are close, with three bottom of the table finishes.
There is also no team in the IPL that has played at least five seasons in the league and has not finished at the bottom. Out of the teams that never finished last, Kochi Tuskers Kerala played only one season, while Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions played only two. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants can break this record if they can avoid finishing at the bottom in IPL 2026.
