What did Erling Haaland Learn From CR7?: Manchester City star-striker Erling Haaland recently opened up about how he idolised Cristiano Ronaldo while growing up as a youth footballer in Norway, and what he learned from watching CR7 play.
From his time growing into one of the best in the world with Manchester United in the mid-to-late 2000s to his becoming a global superstar in Real Madrid, to his move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr in 2022, Cristiano Ronaldo has not only been one of the greatest footballers of all time, but he has also been extremely influential to fans and his colleagues alike.
The Portuguese superstar has developed and adapted throughout his career. From being a wily skilled winger who likes to cut in with the ball, to a dominant striker who could outpace and outclass any defender with his physicality and skill. Now that he is 38 years old, Ronaldo now depends on his shrewd eye for the game to create goalscoring opportunities.
Many fans claim that Erling Haaland will be the one to take Cristiano’s crown of being an elite scorer and arguably the best striker in the world. The Norwegian won the Gerd Muller Trophy at the Ballon d’Or 2023 ceremony for having scored the most goals in the 2022-23 season with 56. He also scored the Premier League scoring record in his first season in the league.
What did Erling Haaland Learn From CR7?
In a recent interview with Norwegian television channel TV2, Haaland opened up about how he learned to adapt his game for the better by watching Ronaldo playing on TV, he said –
“How Cristiano moves, and how he has managed to develop his game. You remember when he played in Manchester United and the first years in Real Madrid, to become more of a striker in Real Madrid. It is incredible for him that he manages. But also how he scores the goals. It is the small movements in the box, and being able to deceive the defenders.”
In the same interview, he also discussed how, while playing for Molde in the Norwegian league, before signing for RB Salzburg, He failed to score many goals. He also claimed that watching Cristiano Ronaldo using all parts of his body, including his head, to score helped Erling grow as a player too.
In the 2023-24 season, Erling Haaland has already scored 18 goals in 20 appearances and is en route to nearing, or even bettering his goal-scoring tally from last season.
