Today was Day Two of the fifth and final Australia vs India Test match being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. On Day One, the Indian Cricket Team batted first and was bowled out for 185. In that inning, Pant played in an unusually defensive manner, scoring 40 runs in 98 deliveries and taking a lot of hits to his body.
Today’s play started with Australia at 9/1. And soon, they lost three more wickets. Steve Smith and debutant Beau Webster saved the innings from a total collapse, but the Aussies were bowled out for 181, trailing by four runs in the first inning.
India came out to bat again in the third inning on Day Two. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul got off to decent starts but couldn’t convert those starts into big totals. Then, Virat Kohli was dismissed in the same manner he has gotten out other times in this series.

At 57/3, in walked Rishabh Pant and hit an in-form Scott Boland for a six on his first ball. The wicketkeeper-batter played an inning that was small but highly impactful. With six ‘4s’ and four ‘6s,’ Pant scored a 50 in just 29 deliveries.
This is not only an unusually quick 50 for Test cricket but is also the second-fastest half-century by an Indian in Test history. The fastest one, scored in 28 balls, was also by Rishabh Pant, who scored it against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru in 2022.
By the time he got out to Australian Cricket Team captain Pat Cummins, he had scored 61 runs in 33 deliveries at a mind-boggling strike rate of 184.85.
All in all, Rishabh scored 10 boundaries in his blistering innings, four of which were sixes. When he got out, the Indian Cricket Team was 124/5 and out of the funk they had found themselves in after the fall of their top order.

At the end of the day’s play, the team was at 141/6 with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar on strike with a 145-run lead.
As it seems that tomorrow will be the final day of this Test and hence, this series, Day Three of the fifth India vs Australia Test match will be the most important day of this entire series. While Australia is 2-1 ahead in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India did win the previous edition of this series. This means that the winner of this match will also take the trophy home.
