Was Cristiano Ronaldo Right About Man United: Cristiano Ronaldo parted ways with Manchester United in December 2022. The split between the two parties was clearly not amicable and the bridge between them seems to have burned.
Before even being terminated by the club, CR7 sat down with Piers Morgan for an explosive interview, where he spoke out about his second stint at the English giants. He complained about everything, from their direction, to their training equipment, and manager Eric Ten Hag.
In light of Manchester United’s disastrous start of the 2023-24 season, we will come to a conclusion on whether Ronaldo’s comments from that famous interview hold any truth.
In the 90-minute interview, Ronaldo spoke about a lot of things. A lot of time was spent discussing his qualms with United. While he commented on a lot of things – like the training equipment and facilities being outdated and his troubled relationship with Eric Ten Hag, what we will focus today on are his comments on the club’s philosophy as a whole.
When discussing his time at the club since his historic 2021 return, Cristiano Ronaldo claimed that Manchester United has made no progress since the retirement of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of the 2012-13 season.

While that comment might sound absurd at first glance, it does hold some weight. Manchester United won the Premier League in Alex Ferguson’s last season. It has been 10 full PL seasons ever since, and United have not picked the trophy once in the last decade. Their best position in the last 10 years has been a distant second in the league, as they have never been in contention of winning it. The only trophies they have since Sir Ferguson’s time have been two League Cups, an FA Cup, and a Europa League.
In the same time period, the club has seen five full-time and two caretaker managers oversee proceedings. Alex Ferguson’s direct successor, David Moyes, did not even last a whole season at the club.

If we dig deeper, Manchester United has also failed to find a team leader, someone who represents the side and its deep history. It can be argued that no club legends have emerged in the last 10 years. All the most expensive signings in the past decade have been underwhelming at best, and outright failures at worst.
But all that is a distant past. What has happened at Manchester United since Cristiano Rolando left, after all, the Portuguese icon did question the club’s ability to make any progress.

CR7 did leave Manchester United in the middle of the 2022-23 season to sign a lucrative contract with Saudi side Al-Nassr. In that season, Man United finished a respectable third, making a return to the Champions League in the next season. The Red Devils also won the League Cup and reached the final of the FA Cup. Despite looking miles off from League winner Manchester City and runner-ups Arsenal, United were certainly the ‘best of the rest’ in the season.
Despite an impressive summer transfer window for Manchester United, which saw the club sign potential future stars and leaders in goalkeeper Andre Onana, midfielders Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat, and striker Rasmus Hojlund, the side has had a disastrous start to the 2023.24 season.

A combination of new players finding their feet at the club, and the side facing an injury crisis sees Manchester United currently sit at ninth after the first 6 matches in the Premier League with three wins and three losses. Even the wins came difficult against weak opponents. Not only that, but United also lost their first group-stage match in the Champions League against Bayern Munich. Some fans are looking for the club to sack manager Ten Hag.
Does this mean that the Dutch manager has lost the plot, no! But the club’s perils mean that the management and the players need some serious sorting out if they are to take anything out of this season.
