Despite winning the Heavyweight Championship in the biggest MMA promotion in the world, many fans call Brock Lesnar one of the most overrated UFC stars of all time. But today, we will discuss why that is not the case. In fact, if not for a few factors outside anyone’s control, The Beast Incarnate might have been one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time.
To understand why that is the case, we must understand what is diverticulitis. This is a serious disease where small bulges or pouches called diverticula, form on the large intestine. When these bulges inflame or infect, one is diagnosed with diverticulitis. This can cause a variety of problems. The illness is like a car crash for the digestive tract.
Brock Lesnar was first diagnosed with diverticulitis in November 2009, at which point he underwent surgery. At the time of his first surgery, the doctor claimed that the severity of the disease meant that Lesnar had been suffering from it for around a year at that point.
While it is not known for certain how one contracts diverticulitis, blows to the stomach and abdominal region are one of the believed reasons for so. For a UFC fighter like Brock Lesnar, that is an understandable explanation. Brock’s doctor also claimed that he was lucky to be alive. For the year his illness was undiagnosed, blows to his body might have ruptured one of those bulges, leading to a condition called peritonitis. This, when left untreated, is almost always fatal.
The UFC Heavyweight Champion at this point, Brock Lesnar won his first bout after the surgery in July 2010 against Shane Carwin but lost against a stamina-merchant in Cain Velasquez.

In May 2011, Brock Lesnar underwent another surgery. This time, doctors removed a foot of his colon. The next fight proved to be his last for 5 years when, in December 2011, Lesnar lost his match to Alistair Overeem. Overeem did target Brock’s middle section. After the fight, the former WWE Champion announced his retirement from the UFC, knowing that staying in the sport might put his health and life at risk.
In only a seven-match UFC career, Brock Lesnar won the UFC Heavyweight Championship. He was a box-office draw and was improving after every fight before his bouts with diverticulitis. His only defeats came in his first-ever UFC match against a legend in Frank Mir, an experienced Cain Velasquez, and against Alistair Overeem, who was bypassing UFC’s testosterone policies.
In a world where Lesnar was never diagnosed with the illness that forced him to quit MMA, he might have regained the Heavyweight Championship at some point. His increasing popularity would have made UFC a global phenomenon sooner. And even if Brock Lesnar did not become one of the greatest fighters of all time, his popularity would have been synonymous with the promotion like with Conor McGregor or Jon Jones.
