Virender Sehwag takes a dig at MS Dhoni: Former India opener Virender Sehwag gave a cheeky response when asked about MS Dhoni’s batting position while also taking a dig at the Dhoni fans for celebrating Dhoni’s innings even when CSK lost the game against Delhi Capitals.
The 42-year-old MS Dhoni has been in sensational hitting form in the ongoing IPL 2024 season. The former CSK captain has clobbered 136 runs in 60 balls, smashing at a strike rate of 226. He’s been dismissed only twice in 10 innings and thus has a huge average of 68.
However, the debate is whether Dhoni is pushing himself too far down the order to not be able to make a match-winning impact. Three of his four cameos this season have ended up in a match-losing cause.
Fans and commentators have all expressed their opinion that Dhoni should come up in the order considering he’s striking the ball so well, but his age of 42 perhaps allows him to bat only in the last 2-3 overs.
He’s batted as low as number 8 multiple times this season, including in CSK’s latest game against the Gujarat Titans. Though CSK lost by 35 runs in the chase of the target of 232, CSK fans celebrated Dhoni’s blitz of 26* runs in 11 balls, in which he whacked 3 sixes and a four. Dhoni came to bat with CSK’s score being 165/6 in the 17th over, the game being effectively sealed by Gujarat already.

Dhoni’s former India teammate Virender Sehwag made a cheeky comment that the CSK fans were entertained by Dhoni’s cameo, so perhaps the loss didn’t hurt them as much as it should.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag said, “We should end the debate around MS Dhoni’s batting position. He knows what he wants to do. It’s his wish. But if you want to win the match, the form he is in and the strike rate that he’s batting at… the other batters need to play at a similar level.”
“I don’t want to get into the debate. Wherever he bats, it’s fine. He played fine, entertained the public; who cares if they win or lose? He entertained the public, that’s it,” he added.
CSK have six wins and six losses and are sitting in the fourth position right now. Their next two matches are against the Rajasthan Royals and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
