Virender Sehwag slammed Sam Curran: Former Punjab Kings captain Virender Sehwag tore into England all-rounder Sam Curran, labeling him as of “no use” in the ongoing IPL 2024 season.
On Sunday night, Punjab Kings lost their sixth match of the season. With only two wins in eight games so far, they are heading toward the exit door.
Sam Curran has led PBKS in their last three matches as Shikhar Dhawan is out of action due to a shoulder injury. Curran’s performances have been underwhelming since last season when PBKS made him the then-most expensive player in IPL history by buying him for a whopping INR 18.5 crore in the IPL 2023 mini-auction.
Last season, he picked up only 10 wickets and averaged 27 with the bat, striking at 135. This year he’s been even more disappointing with the bat: an average of 19 with a strike rate of 116. The left-armer has snapped 11 wickets and leaked at 8.79 runs per over. He’s also shuffled his batting position around. He’s been dismissed for three single-digit scores in his last five innings.
Virender Sehwag slammed Sam Curran:
Former India opener Virender Sehwag was critical of Sam Curran’s place in the Punjab team, asking if the England all-rounder could win a match either with the bat or ball.
Sehwag said on Cricbuzz,
“I wouldn’t keep Sam Curran as a batting all-rounder or a bowling all-rounder. Because such a player is of no use, who does some batting and some bowling. Either you win the game with your batting or win the game with your bowling. Either you hit the bullseye or you don’t perform at all.”
Punjab Kings’s latest loss came against Gujarat Titans in a low-scoring match in Chandigarh. This was their fourth loss in a row. Curran’s side is in the ninth position in the points table, just above RCB.
After electing to bat first, Punjab managed 142 runs as they were choked by Gujarat’s spin trio of Rashid Khan, R Sai Kishore, and Noor Ahmad. Then, even though PBKS bowlers took regular wickets and dragged the game till the last over, GT were always the favorites while chasing an under-par score. Rahul Tewatia, GT’s iceman, provided the finish with 36* (18).
Curran praised the GT spinners and admitted that Punjab’s total was well below par.
The PBKS captain said,
“The Afghanistan spinners are world class bowlers and Sai Kishore bowled really well, credit to them. That is the third time we have used that pitch, anything above 160 would have been a par total but we still fought well.”
