Virender Sehwag Names His XI For T20 World Cup: Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag recently revealed his Indian playing XI for the upcoming 2024 ICC T20 World Cup starting on June 2 In the West Indies and the United States. And surprisingly, he omitted Hardik Pandya from the playing XI.
Hardik has not had the best of IPL 2024. Having been injured since the 2023 ODI World Cup, Pandya was named the captain of Mumbai Indians before the IPL auction. It would be an understatement to claim that this move by MI ownership was not received well by the fans.
Wherever MI has played this season, Hardik Pandya has been vehemently booed, not by opposition fans, but by fans of the team he is the captain of.
It hasn’t gone too well on the field either. There have been massive mistakes in captaincy in terms of who should bowl which over and who should come out to bat at any moment. Combine that with inconsistency in performance, the Indians are currently seventh on the IPL table with six points in eight matches.
It hasn’t even been a successful IPL on a personal front as India’s supposed best all-rounder has failed with ball and bat. While batting, he has scored 151 runs in eight matches with an average of 21.57 and 142.45 strike rate. While with the ball, he has bowled only 17 overs and picked four wickets with an average of 46.5 and an economy of 10.94.
Virender Sehwag Names His XI For T20 World Cup
With IPL 2024 being a dismal tournament for the 31-year-old, people are questioning his place in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. And Virender Sehwag has outright said that the Gujarat-based all-rounder does not deserve a place to be in the playing XI.
On a recent appearance on The Club Prairie Fire with Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist, Sehwag named what in his mind should be India’s playing XI in the World Cup. And when questioned about Hardik not being in it, the Sultan of Multan said –
“You asked me to pick my playing XI. Hardik will be there in the 15-man squad but not in the XI.”
Sehwag also surprisingly named Sandeep Sharma in his playing XI. Sharma, who has been out for much of the season so far, impressed in his return game for Rajasthan Royals against Mumbai Indians where he picked a fifer and ended with the figures of 5/18.
This is Virender Sehwag’s Playing XI for the 2024 T20 World Cup –
Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Shivam Dube/Rinku Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Sandeep Sharma
India will kick off its T20 World Cup on June 5 when they take on Ireland. The Men in Blue will then face Pakistan on June 9, the United States on June 15, and Canada on June 16.
