Virat Kohli MIght Be Snubbed From T20I Squad: Virat Kohli’s place in the Indian T20I side might be in jeopardy in a year when India is looking to lift the T20 World Cup title.
Several reports and sources have something to say about Kohli’s status on the T20I side. While a recent report claims that the 35-year-old is not able to cope with the demands in the shortest format, yet another source claims the BCCI is ready to take a harsh decision in the matters of selection.
Both – Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma, took a break from T20Is following India’s defeat in the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Both returned to the T20I side earlier this year against Afghanistan.
Kohli’s approach for India in T20Is has always been in question. Virat, arguably being the best batter of this generation, has always played an anchor role in all formats for the national team. While this is a crucial role in Tests and even in ODIs, is an anchor and an essential role in a T20 batting order.

Maybe that was the message behind a recent report in The Telegraph, which states that the former Indian captain, “hasn’t been able to cope with the team’s needs in the shortest format.”
Some sources from within the BCCI also state that national selectors are ready to take some tough decisions going into the World Cup. Does that mean Virat Kohli might be out of contention for the T20I side?
The same Telegraph report also claimed that Kohli would only be considered for the World Cup if he had a “superlative IPL” with the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The question now arises, who will bat at #3 for India if Virat is snubbed? The likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are vying for the opening slot alongside Rohit Sharma. Anyone who is snubbed from the spot can be tried at #3, just like how it happened with Gill in India’s recent Tests against England.
While there are several players who can be slotted into the #3 spot, will any of those be able to match Virat Kohli’s run output? This follows into the question about the true essence of batting in T20s, which is – is batting for long better than batting fast in the shortest format?
