Virat Kohli Close To Several Records In CT Final: Indian Cricket Team star batter Virat Kohli is just a few runs away from breaking several records in ODI cricket ahead of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand.
The India vs New Zealand CT 2025 final will be played on March 9 in the Dubai International Stadium. Both of these teams were in Group A of the tournament, where India finished first and the Kiwis finished second. In the group stage game between the two earlier in this competition, the Men in Blue won comfortably by 44 runs.

Now, the final between the two teams will be the third knockout match in an ICC tournament between these teams in the last four years. First, New Zealand defeated India in the World Test Championship final. Then, India defeated the Black Caps in the semifinal of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
But this match is not only about another ICC trophy being on the line, as Indian batter Virat Kohli is just a few runs away from breaking two major records.
Virat has been in fine form in the Champions Trophy 2025 so far. In the four CT25 matches he has played so far, he has scored a 100 against Pakistan and an 84 against Australia in the semi-final, winning two Player of the Match awards in this tournament so far.

But now, ahead of the final, not only is he in fine form, but he is just fingertips away from breaking a few records. The first one of these records is that he is just 54 runs away from becoming the second-highest run scorer in ODI cricket. Kohli has 14180 runs in 301 matches at an average of 58.11 and has the third most runs in this format. He is right behind Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, who has 14234 runs in 404 ODIs at an average of 41.98.
A fine half-century will make Virat Kohli the second-highest run scorer in ODI cricket, which will leave just Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him with over 18400 runs.
Another record, which is even easier to achieve, is him becoming the highest run scorer in the Champions Trophy ever. Currently, West Indies legend Chris Gayle holds the record for scoring the most runs in tournament history, having made 791 runs in 17 matches at a solid average of 52.73.
Kohli currently has 746 runs in 17 matches at an average of 82.88, just 46 runs behind Gayle. Scoring just 47 runs in the final against New Zealand would make him the highest run-scorer in CT history.
However, this record might be the more difficult one to get. While an ODI run record might be further away, Kohli will have more opportunities to reach that record. Meanwhile, this will surely be Virat’s last Champions Trophy match, as it is highly unlikely that he will play for four more years, making it his only opportunity to become the highest run scorer in competition history.
Whatever happens in the final in regards to Virat Kohli and his multiple records, the India vs New Zealand ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final promises to be a classic.
