Virat Kohli Clears Air On Retirement Rumors: Indian Cricket Team star Virat Kohli opens up about his future on the cricket field in a recent interview. He also cleared the air regarding the rumours that he would announce his retirement soon, saying he won’t.
Kohli has been an absolute star in Indian and international cricket for a decade and a half. He carried the legacy of Indian batters being the best in the world, the one which was once carried by the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar. At the age of 36, he has achieved everything a cricketer can, from being the world No. 1 across formats to winning World Cups and Champions Trophies.
Virat Kohli Clears Air On Retirement Rumors
Most recently, he was part of the Indian team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, in which he scored 218 runs in five matches at an average of 54.50, which included a century against Pakistan. He played a massive role in his team lifting that title and being undefeated while doing so.
During CT 2025, several rumours emerged that senior players on the team, like Ravindra Jadeja, captain Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli, could announce their retirement from ODI cricket after India won that competition. However, no such announcement came. In fact, Rohit even ensured that he is not looking to retire from international cricket just yet.
These rumours came to light after these three veteran players announced their retirement from T20I cricket after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup.
It was now Kohli’s turn to make some comments about his future. In a recent appearance at Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit powered by Leaders, he highlighted how he is looking at his own future in the game, that as long as he feels joy in playing the sport and can perform at the top level, he will continue to take the field, saying,
“Today, I am not playing for achievements. It’s pretty much come down to the pure joy of playing. As long as that feeling is intact, I will continue playing. I have to be honest about that with myself. I had this interesting conversation with Rahul Dravid when he was our coach. He said one always has to stay in touch with oneself to figure out where one is placed in life.”
Then, in the most concrete way possible, Virat announced that he will not be taking any retirements at the moment.
“Don’t get nervous; I am not making any announcements. As of now, everything seems fine,” he said.
The only title Virat Kohli is yet to win in his long and illustrious career is the IPL. Having played with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru since the inaugural 2008 season, the Indian Cricket Team star is the highest run scorer in league history but is yet to win the title.
He will now be looking to play in and win IPL 2025. RCB’s campaign in the competition will start on the very first day, as they will face defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders in the inaugural match on Saturday, March 22, in Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.
