Vini Pips Rodri To Win The Best FIFA Player Award: Brazilian international and Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. won the Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year 2024, beating Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to the crown.
FIFA’s ‘The Best’ awards are handed out by the sport’s global governing council to recognise some of the best players and moments of the year in football.

Some might confuse this award ceremony with the Ballon d’Or, but the two are quite distinct, despite having a similar functionality. While all the awards in the Ballon d’Or ceremony are awarded by the French magazine ‘France Football,’ ‘The Best’ awards are overseen by FIFA itself.
To recognise the best player in the world, FIFA separated their awards from the Ballon d’Or in 2016 after a six-year partnership between the two and has been naming their own best player each year. Sometimes, the same player wins both awards, but this is not the case a lot of times, including this year.
The voting includes national team coaches, national team captains, media representatives, and the general public, with each getting 25% of the votes.
In 2024, with 48 points, Vinicius Jr. won the award, followed closely by Manchester City playmaker Rodri in second with 43 points. Vini’s Real Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham finished third with 37 points.

As for The Best FIFA Women’s Player of the Year, two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona took home the title. Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez was named The Best Goalkeeper of 2024, while Alyssa Naeher of the Chicago Red Stars was named The Best Women’s Goalkeeper.
The Best Men’s Coach was, to minimal surprise, Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, while former Chelsea and now the United States Women’s Team manager Emma Hayes was named The Best Women’s Coach.
One of the most anticipated FIFA awards is the Puskas Award, named after Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas, and it is awarded for the ‘best’ and ‘most aesthetically beautiful’ goal of the year. This was given to Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United for his stunning overhead kick goal against Everton in the Premier League in November 2023.
This year, the women’s alternative to the Puskas Award was announced, called the Marta Award, named after the Brazilian legend who also became its first recipient for her skilful goal against Jamaica in a friendly in June 2024.
