Vignesh Puthur Receives Award From Nita Ambani: Nita Ambani, member of the Ambani family that owns the Mumbai Indians, handed out a special award in the dressing room to young debutant Vignesh Puthur for his brilliant bowling performance against the Chennai Super Kings in his side’s opening match of IPL 2025.
CSK vs MI was Match 3 of the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League and was played in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. A match between arch-rivals and two of the most successful teams in league history, it is one of the biggest league stage matches of any IPL season. The Super Kings won the toss and decided to bowl first.
The Indians did not have a good outing with the bat. On a pitch that was a little sticky, Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck. Lauded overseas batters Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks too departed during the powerplay. Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Tiak Verma scored 29 and 31 runs, respectively. It was only due to a quickfire 28 off 15 that MI was able to reach a respectable total of 155.
At the innings break, Rohit Sharma was replaced by Impact Player Vignesh Puthur. The 24-year-old wrist spinner from Kerala was bought for 30 lakhs by Mumbai in the mega-auction.
Chennai’s start to their inning wasn’t too good either, with opener Rahul Tripathi losing his wicket in the second over itself. But then, Rachin Ravindra and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad stabilised the inning.
With CSK having scored 78 runs in almost eight overs, the match was all but over for the Mumbai Indians. However, some hope was provided by the youngster Puthur, who first dismissed Chennai Super Kings captain Gaikwad after he scored a 50 with a strike rate of over 200. He then got the dangerous Shivam Dube out for just nine runs. Finally, the left-arm leggie dismissed Deepak Hooda and ended his four-over spell with the impressive figures of 3/32.

Despite Vignesh Puthur’s dream debut, MI ended up losing the match by four wickets with five balls to spare, and Noor Ahmed won the Player of the Match award for his spell of 4/18 for the Super Kings. However, Puthur did end up receiving a special award from his own team.
In a video released on social media by the Mumbai Indians, Nita Ambani is seen handing out a special award for Puthur. The 24-year-old then gave a speech about making his IPL debut in the CSK vs MI match. HE said,
“I want to thank the MI franchise for giving me the opportunity to play in this match. I never thought in my life I would play with these players. I am very happy. Team, we could’ve won. Thank you so much, and especially our captain, Surya Bhai, who was very supportive. That is why I never felt that much pressure. Thanks to all my teammates for supporting me.”
Having lost their opening game of the season, five-time champions Mumbai Indians will face the Gujarat Titans in their next game on Saturday, March 29, in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
