Former English skipper Michael Vaughan brutally slammed England’s stand-in Test captain Ollie Pope. According to Vaughan, Pope isn’t fit to lead England.
England is currently playing Sri Lanka at home in the ongoing Test series. Ollie Pope and Co. have won the first Test of the 3-match series and are leading in the second one. Then why is Ollie Pope getting criticized?
Pope, ever since becoming the captain, has flopped in batting. He couldn’t score more than a single digit in both innings of the Test. He only scored one run in the ongoing second Test.
Michael Vaughan Calls Ollie Pope an Insecure Human
Michael Vaughan said that he doesn’t like the personality of Ollie Pope. The former England captain called Pope an insecure human. Vaughan thinks Harry Brook is a better caption.
“I don’t like him as a captain as he doesn’t have the personality to lead England. He is an insecure human being and the captaincy has put him under pressure. He was batting fine at number three. Harry Brook is the captain in the making. I don’t see Ollie Pope leading England for a long time,” Vaughan said.
Vaughan also opined that Pope should learn from Joe Root who has a strong mentality and bats quite well under pressure.
“The England support should calm down Ollie Pope a bit and give him more chances. Look at Joe Root, who has a strong mentality. He comes out to bat without any pressure, and that keeps him going. Ollie Pope should look at Root and take some idea on how to bat. He should make it a routine.”
