Robin Uthappa On Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill: Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has compared the opening duo of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal to arguably the most iconic opening duo in the history of India in ODIs, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, saying that the young pait reminds him of the iconic duo.
The opening left-right combination of Jaiswal and Gill has been a great find for India. The two will likely open for India across all formats in years to come, as India might have found a solid duo at the top of the order for the next decade.
While Yashasvi is the aggressor of the two, coming in with attacking intentions right from the get-go, Shubman plays more of an anchor role, making more runs and staying in the crease for as long as possible.
The two only managed to open for India twice in the recent three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka due to Gill missing the second game. In the first game, the two gave India an incredible start, scoring 74 runs in six overs before both of them got out on successive balls.
Meanwhile, on a difficult pitch in the last game, while Yashasvi Jaiswal got out early, it was Shubman Gill who stabilized the inning. His 39 off 37 deliveries took India to 137 at the end of 20 overs as the team won the game in the super over and whitewashed Sri Lanka.
India has had a rich history of left-right opening combinations. The more recent fans would remember the havoc Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan wreaked across all formats in the 2010s. There is also the duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, the two winning two World Cups with India.
But the most iconic left-right opening pair for India was Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. In the early 2000s, while Sabhin was the best batsman in the world, Ganguly was the captain of the Indian National Cricket Team. The two formed a formidable pair for years and are, to this day, the most successful opening duo in the history of ODI cricket, scoring 6609 runs in 136 innings at an average of 49.32.
Robin Uthappa On Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill
Robin Uthappa, who now works as a cricket commentator, recently remarked that the duo of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal reminded him of the opening partnerships between Sachin and Ganguly.
“I do see them; when I look at them, they remind me of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar going out together, where their games kind of complimented each other. Their strategies complimented each other; that’s what I see when I see these two go out to bat together,” said Uthappa on a recent appearance on the Sony Sports Network.
In the short time Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill have partnered up to open the inning, the two have scored 516 runs together with an average of 64.5.
