Robin Uthappa On Senior Players In Squad For T20 WC: Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa feels that certain senior players should have sat out the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup and given young players a chance.
The ICC 2024 T20 World Cup will commence just days after the IPL, on June 2, and will be played in the West Indies and the United States.
India announced their 15-man squad for the tournament earlier this month, and all the usual suspects are in the team. The likes of captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja are not only in the squad but are also expected to be in the playing XI.

While the latter two have not been in the best form as of late, these four are the senior-most players in the team, and their performances will determine India’s fate in the World Cup.
With their inclusion in the team, the likes of Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh were omitted from the 15-man squad. They are instead a part of a four-man reserve players unit.
Robin Uthappa On Senior Players In Squad For T20 WC
Robin Uthappa, who represented India in the inaugural T20 World Cup (World T20) all the way back in 2007, believes that certain senior players should have stepped aside for the upcoming tournament and allowed young players to shine in the World Cup.
Speaking on JioCinema ahead of the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans game in the IPL, which was later washed off, Uthappa had this to say about the inclusion of several senior players in the T20 World Cup squad:
“I’m gonna catch a lot of flak for this, but I’ll take it. I think they should’ve moved on after the previous World Cup itself. I think the youngsters should’ve played in this World Cup. The senior players have had their go, and these guys are showing true potential. The fact that they’ve been performing in IPL consistently… a lot of these guys who are performing now, the likes of Shubman Gill should be there.”
India will kick off their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign in Group A against Ireland on June 5 before taking on arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9. Next will be a match against the US on June 12, before finishing off the group stage against Canada on June 15.
Here is India’s 15-man squad (plus four reserves) for the 2024 T20 World Cup:
Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh
Reserve Players: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan
