Manchester United are looking for the signature of Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder Frankie de Jong this summer after having him on the radar for years at this point.
Frankie is currently out due to an ankle injury and is hence missing the UEFA Euros 2024, a tournament where his country has reached the semi-finals as of writing this.
As stated above, the 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a few seasons now. United manager Erik Ten Hag has previously managed de Jong when the two were at Ajax. The Dutch midfielder played under the Dutch coach for the Dutch club in the storied 2018-19 season when Ajax made it to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League and was minutes away from making it to the final.
Currently at Barcelona, Frankie de Jong has been the most important player on the Catalan side for some time now. He is invaluable to his current club, which has rejected massive offers for him on multiple occasions.
One such offer came last season when an unknown club reportedly put a bid of 100 million euros on the Dutch star, which was promptly rejected by Barca. The club stated that they had no interest in selling him and that he was not on the transfer list.
Manchester United Shows Interest in Frankie De Jong
A recent report by Barca Universal states that Man United, who finished eighth in the Premier League but will play in the Europa League due to winning the FA Cup, are once again planning on putting forward a bid but have yet to contact the player or the club.
Amidst rumors of his destination next season, Frankie de Jong put forth his anger with the media, blasting reporters and journalists in a recent press conference for speculating on his future.
“If I’m honest, I am getting quite irritated lately. I am very angry at what you (media) write or say about me. There are a lot of stories that are simply not true. I simply can’t get my head around it. Some of you write lies all the time, and I don’t get how you are not ashamed about it,” said de Jong.

The dependable midfielder then went on to add that the media is clueless about his current contract but yet publishes false numbers, saying:
“There’s a lot of talk about my contract situation and my salary. There’s a lot of smoke in there and plenty of lies. You, the media, are saying that I earn around £34.3 million per year (€40 million per year)… this is really far from the truth. I am not going to reveal figures, but that’s simply lying. I am really happy here. Barcelona was and is the club of my life; it was my dream to play here, and it still is. I am not happy with the press and everything that surrounds the club because, as I’ve been saying, it’s full of lies.”
But it is not only Manchester United who is interested in signing Frankie, as the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich too have shown interest in him.
