Two IPL teams have bought teams in The Hundred: In major news regarding the ongoing acquisition of the teams in The Hundred competition, 49% equity of the Manchester Originals has been sold to the RPSG Group, owned by Sanjiv Goenka, who is the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and the Durban Super Giants in SA20.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, a little less than half of the stakes of the Lancashire-based franchise have been bought by Goenka for a whopping 107 million GBP.
This is, however, still half of the price (195 million GBP) that the London Spirit’s 49% stake was sold to a consortium of the US-based tech billionaires. Goenka reportedly also was keen to get London Spirit but had to tap out as the bidding rose.
Lancashire said in their statement on Monday,
“We have been very focused on securing a great partner—ideally from the IPL—and RPSG has been our preferred bidder for some time,” the club said.
“We are delighted by the outcome and look forward to working together to create an exciting future. Together, we have a shared ambition to create a very special cricket team for the people of Manchester and the wider North West region.”
Talking about Sanjiv Goenka, he is passionate about sports and has now purchased three cricket teams. Also, the RPSG Group’s football team in the Indian Super League is Mohun Bagan Super Giant. They also own a table tennis team, the RPSG Mavericks Kolkata, that plays in the Ultimate Table Tennis league.
Two IPL teams have bought teams in The Hundred; two more are likely to purchase
It has been learned that an IPL team and another tech consortium were in the race with Goenka for Manchester Originals, but eventually, the billionaire Indian businessman won it.
Five teams of The Hundred have been sold so far: Oval Invincibles, Welsh Fire, London Spirit, Birmingham Phoenix, and Manchester Originals. Mumbai Indians’ owners, Reliance Industries Limited, have purchased a 49% stake in The Oval Invincibles for £60 million.
Three teams—Nottingham-based Trent Rockets, Yorkshire-owned Northern Superchargers, and Hampshire’s Southern Brave—are further left to be sold. It is believed that the SunRisers franchise is set to buy one team, while Delhi Capitals’ GMR Group, who have already bought the Hampshire County, are set to buy the Southern Brave.
