Twitter reactions to Afghanistan beating England: Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai starred in Afghanistan’s epic win over England on Wednesday in Lahore to knock Jos Buttler’s team out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Afghanistan continue their rise in international cricket. This is the second time in a row that Afghanistan have beaten England in an ICC ODI event, having thumped Buttler’s unit in Delhi in the World Cup 2023 as well. In between, last year, they slayed a few other giants like Australia and New Zealand to reach the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
This was a must-win game for both teams as England had lost to Australia and Afghanistan to South Africa. This result meant the Three Lions are out of the semi-finals race, while Afghanistan will next have to beat Australia in another must-win clash to reach the semis.
Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat. They suffered an early shock with three wickets for 37 runs. Ibrahim Zadran, though, held his end and formed crucial partnerships with Hashmatullah Shahidi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Mohammad Nabi.
Zadran became the first Afghanistan batsman to hit a century in the ICC Champions Trophy and also recorded the highest individual score of 177 in the Champions Trophy history. Shahidi, Omarzai, and Nabi contributed with vital 40s. Afghanistan ended with a total of 325/7.
England’s chase was similar to Afghanistan’s batting. Joe Root held the innings at his end, scoring 120 off 111, his first ODI century since 2019. There were contributions from Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, and Jamie Overton, but none of them could score more than 40. Omarzai took one wicket in the powerplay, one in the middle overs, and three in the death, including those of Buttler, Root, and Overton.
It was fitting that Omarzai took the last England wicket to fall and Ibrahim took the catch to seal Afghanistan’s memorable win.
Fans on Twitter erupted with various reactions to Afghanistan’s incredible win over England.
