Twitter reactions on Shreyas Iyer: Twitter reactions on Shreyas Iyer: Shreyas Iyer continued to improve his stocks as he kicked off his journey with the Punjab Kings with a stunning knock of 97* against Gujarat Titans in both teams’ first match of the IPL 2025 season.
The GT vs PBKS encounter took place on Tuesday evening at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with home captain Shubman Gill winning the toss and electing to bowl first.
After the opening stand of 28 runs off 19 balls between Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, captain Iyer, who was bought for INR 26.75 crore in the mega auction, the second-most expensive player in IPL history, walked in.
Iyer, who is out of India’s Test and T20I teams but recently played a vital role in India’s triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, attacked from the onset of his innings.
On a good pitch and at a venue where chasing teams have fared better than the batting-first sides in night matches, Shreyas Iyer knew PBKS had to post an above-par total.
But, regardless of PBKS targeting a 220-plus score, Iyer’s modus operandi in the last couple of years has been to be aggressive and turn the tide in his side’s favor. Iyer has found immense success in ODIs with this method of putting pressure on the bowling attack, something he did today as well by targeting Sai Kishore and Rashid Khan.
While Iyer has always been excellent at hitting spinners, this year, he’s shown a much-improved hitting game against pacers as well. Further evidence of the same came in this innings as he hammered Kagiso Rabada, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj for boundaries.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t reach his century and was left stranded on 97* as Shashank Singh faced all the balls of the last over off Siraj, though he did take a full toss of those six balls, cracking five fours in it.
Shashank revealed that Iyer had given him the license to aim for boundaries and not think of his century. Shashank said, “Shreyas Iyer told me from ball 1, ‘Don’t look at my hundred.’ Just play your shots; I’m happy.”
PBKS’ total of 243 today was their second-highest IPL total ever. That it came in the debut captaincy match of Iyer is a remarkable thing.
Fans applauded Iyer’s fantastic innings against GT, not least because of the cricketer having undergone a battle with the BCCI last year when he was omitted from the central contracts for apparently not prioritizing domestic cricket.

Shreyas Iyer had international matches, was found out with a weakness, made a scapegoat for needless reasons and then went to domestic cricket, worked on every bit of his game and is now an absolute monster of a cricketer who is just hungry for runs.
