Jonathan Trott Speaks On Afghanistan In Semi Final: Afghanistan cricket team coach Jonathan Trott claimed that he and his team are positive about their chances in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa.
For the first time in team history, Afghanistan has made it to the semi-final of a World Cup. Playing in their first-ever semis, cricket’s latest superpower had a topsy-turvy journey to the final four.
They opened their tournament with a splendid 84-run win over New Zealand, which was followed by dominant wins over Uganda and Papua New Guinea. Then came a downturn in the story, as Afghanistan was thrashed by the West Indies in the final game of their group.
Having still made it to the Super 8, the Afghans had a poor start to this round as they were defeated by India in a one-sided affair. But the next game was where it all changed. Facing Australia in a must-win game for the second tournament running, Afghanistan did not allow what happened in their match in the 2023 Cricket World Cup to repeat.

Jonathan Trott Speaks On Afghanistan In Semi Final
But Afghanistan is not there to enjoy the scenery or be complacent after reaching a massive milestone in their cricket history. Team coach Jonathan Trott had a lot to say in a press conference ahead of the semis. First, he discussed how the team only managed to score 115 against Bangladesh but won the game with their bowling.
“We didn’t bat well against Bangladesh. I know it was not a good wicket, but we could have taken singles and hit the ball in the gaps. I believe the batters were a bit nervy.”
Trott would go on to say that his team is now in the semi-finals and is here to win it all.
“But now we are in the semi-finals, and the players are positive about the chances. We are not going into the semis just to compete, but to win it.”
Finally, Trott would go on to say that, unlike South Africa, Afghanistan has no bad history with semi-finals in the World Cup, and that will help them, saying,
“There’s no preconceived ideas or history of failure or success in semifinals… We are not carrying any baggage from the past. However, there is a need to tighten up some areas a bit. We will give our best in the important clash. It is a new challenge for us. I think that we have nothing to lose, and that makes us dangerous, and it will put a lot of pressure on the opposition.”
In the ODI and T20 World Cups, South Africa has played a combined seven semi-finals, failing to win even a single one. On the other hand, this is Afghanistan’s first semi-final. Whatever happens in this game, one of these teams will play in the final of a World Cup for the very first time.
Afghanistan will take on South Africa in semi-final 1 of the 2024 t20 World Cup in the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad & Tobago, on Thursday, June 27 at 6:00 AM (IST).
