Top Run Scorers in Test Cricket: After equalling Rahul Dravid’s tally of Test centuries, England star Joe Root is closing in on Dravid’s runs tally in the longest format.
In the second Test of the ongoing series in New Zealand, Root notched up his 36th Test ton, coming to level with Dravid on this record. Already England’s highest Test centurion, only four batsmen have hit more Test hundreds than Root. Sachin Tendulkar leads the tally with 51 Test centuries in his illustrious career of 200 Tests.
Tendulkar also is leading the runs chart with 15921.
Top Run Scorers in Test Cricket: Joe Root Chases Rahul Dravid in the 4th spot
Joe Root is currently the fifth leading run-scorer in Test cricket with 12886 runs, scored in 151 Tests at an average of 50 with 36 centuries and 64 fifties.
Ahead of him on the fourth spot is India’s former captain Rahul Dravid, who amassed 13288 runs in 164 Test matches at an average of 52 with 36 tons and 63 fifties. Root needs only 402 runs more to equal Dravid’s runs tally.
By the end of his career, Root is expected to surpass Dravid (13288), Jacques Kallis (13289), and Ricky Ponting (13378). But will he be able to break Tendulkar’s record of 15921 runs is what everyone has on their mind?
Root’s former England captain Alastair Cook is hoping that Root crosses Tendulkar’s mark and becomes the first-ever batsman in the history of Test cricket to get 16000 runs.
Cook said a couple of months ago,
“You just never know. I hope he can get very close, if not be the first person who scores 16,000 Test runs. It’d be a great achievement.”
As far as England are concerned, they have taken a 2-0 unassailable lead in the three-Test series. The last Test of the series will kick off on December 14 in Hamilton.
