Top 5 Biggest Chases In IPL History: In the past two seasons, the bar of run scores in the Indian Premier League has exponentially increased. When a score of 180 was considered well over par and a winning score in most games, now, it is nothing more than an average total.
Teams now regularly score 200+ while batting first. And that score is, on many occasions, easily chased. Compare this to 10 years ago, when a chase of over 200 was considered a massive feat. 12 out of the top 20 chases in the IPL, all of which are well over 200 runs, are from the last three seasons.

5) Rajasthan Royals vs KKR – 224/8 (2024)
While all the chases on this list are beyond impressive, this might be the smoothest massive chase in the IPL. This one was mostly a one-man show. KKR batted first in this match at the Eden Gardens, played on April 16, 2024, and scored 223 runs on the back of a solid ton by Sunil Narine.
In response, Rajasthan Royals’ star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal got out for 19, and captain Sanju Samson scored only 12. With two wickets falling in the powerplay, Riyan Parag mounted a rescue with the man who was going to save this match, Jos Buttler.
While wickets kept falling around him, Buttler batted slowly and steadily, putting the pedal to the metal at the right time, accelerating at the perfect time, scoring a century, and chasing the target down at the last ball of the inning, with RR’s final score being 224/8.
4) Rajasthan Royals vs PBKS – 226/6 (2020)
For almost four years, this was the highest successful chase in IPL history. This is the match that convinced many that RR and PBKS have one of the most exciting rivalries in this league. While batting first, off the back of a 100 by Mayank Agarwal, the Punjab-based team made 223 runs.
In response, RR saw Jos Buttler’s wicket fall quickly. But then, Sanju Samson and captain Steve Smith built together an 81-run partnership. By the time Smith got out for 50 off 27, the score was 100/2 in the ninth over. Samson got out right as the death overs commenced, and the team needed over 60 runs in the last four.
This match is remembered as Rahul Tewatia’s coming-out party. At the end of the 17th, the all-rounder was batting at 17 of 23 with 51 runs required. Tewatia then hit five sixes in an over by Sheldon Cottrell. In the end, the Royals chased the target down with three balls to spare, with the score in the end being 226/6.
3) Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 230/4 (2025)
This one might be the most clinical chase in the history of T20 cricket. In a very crucial match for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, LSG scored 227 runs while batting first, with captain Rishabh Pant scoring a stellar century at the end of an otherwise dull season. Then, in response, every RCB batter contributed.
The opening pair of Virat Kohli and Phil Salt scored 60 runs in the powerplay. But when Rajat Patidar and Liam Livingstone got out back-to-back in the eighth over, the Royal Challengers looked in trouble. And then, in the 12th over, Kohli was dismissed after scoring a half-century.
This brought Mayank Yadav and Jitesh Sharma to the strike, who played some of the best cricket one could watch. Their attacking strokeplay was second to none. While Mayank scored 41 off 23, Jitesh played a Player of the Match knock of 85 off 33 and won his team the match with more than one over to spare, as the final score was 230/4.
An interesting fact about this match: for being a massive chase, RCB only hit one six in the first 13 overs of their inning.

2) Sunrisers Hyderabad – 247/2 (2025)
Yet another one from 2025, this chase brought the Sunrisers Hyderabad fans back to 2024, when they were the most dominant team in world cricket. SRH had a lacklustre IPL 2025, but this chase was a shining light in an otherwise dark season.
The Punjab Kings, who finished at the top of the table at the end of the season, scored 245 runs while batting first, with captain Shreyas Iyer playing a brilliant knock of 82 off 36. This total seemed impossible to chase, especially for an out-of-form Sunrisers team. But this match was going to become a memorable one.
The Hyderabad opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head gave their team a dream start. The two uber-attacking batters batted together for 12 overs and scored a whopping 17 runs in the opening partnership before Head was dismissed for 66. Soon after, Abhishek completed his ton and would end up scoring 141 runs, which is the largest individual score for an Indian in the IPL.
SRH chased the target down with nine balls to spare as the final score was 247/2. Naturally, Abhishek Sharma was named the Player of the Match.
1) Punjab Kings – 262/2 (2024)
This chase came out of absolutely nowhere. In this season, while the Sunrisers Hyderabad were going to finish in the top two and were revolutionising the way T20 cricket is played, the Punjab Kings were having yet another dull season and were nowhere near the playoffs. But for one night, the scripts flipped.
Like a typical match day for SRH in 2024, the team batted first and scored 261 runs. And while this score was semi-common for this team to score, nobody had even come close to chasing a target like this in the league. Despite that, the PBKS opening duo of Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow gave their team a fantastic start, making 93 runs within the powerplay before Prabhsimran got out for 54 off 20.
Rilee Rossouw then came in and scored 26 off 16, but the star of the show was Bairstow, who went on to score a fantastic century, going not out at the end of the inning at 108 off 48. Couple that with a quick-fire 68 off 28 by Shashank Singh, and the largest chase in IPL history, the history of the Indian Premier League, became not only possible but quite easy.
The Punjab Kings ended with a score of 262/2 at the end of their inning. The Kings won the match by eight wickets and with eight balls to spare.
