According to Tamim Iqbal Retires From International Cricket, Tamim expressed his decision to return to international cricket after meeting with the Prime Minister at her residence on July 7. He shared, “During this afternoon, the Prime Minister graciously invited me to her home. She advised and encouraged me to continue playing, prompting my decision to come out of retirement at this moment.”
“I may decline requests from others, but it was impossible for me to refuse the authority of the Prime Minister. The influence of Papon (Nazmul Hasan) and Mashrafe (Mortaza) were also significant factors. Mashrafe called me here, and Papon was also present. The Prime Minister even granted me a one-and-a-half-month break for my treatment and personal matters. Once I am mentally prepared, I will resume playing the remaining matches.”
Tamim Iqbal Reverses Retirement Decision: Tamim’s sudden retirement announcement had caught many by surprise, particularly as it came months before the upcoming 2023 World Cup in India. Interestingly, his decision coincided with a public clash between Tamim and the team management. Nazmul Hasan, in particular, openly criticized Tamim for admitting his lack of full fitness before the opening ODI against Afghanistan, despite still being willing to play.

Following Tamim’s retirement announcement, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) promptly called an emergency meeting and appointed Litton Das as the interim captain for the remaining two ODIs against Afghanistan. Late in the night, Nazmul publicly urged Tamim to reconsider his “emotional” and “rash” decision.
Nazmul, the BCB President, addressed the media after Tamim’s statement outside the Prime Minister’s residence, stating, “I had assumed that his decision was an emotional one. Of course, this is a tremendous relief. Without a captain, how can we play?”
“I knew that if I could sit down with him and have a conversation, I could convince him. Today, we were invited by the Prime Minister, and Tamim has confirmed that he is withdrawing his retirement letter. However, he has requested a break of one and a half months to regain his physical and mental fitness.”
Tamim Iqbal Reverses Retirement Decision: In a subsequent report, it was revealed that Tamim’s retirement reversal occurred after a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Dhaka residence. Tamim, accompanied by his wife, engaged in discussions with the Prime Minister, alongside former captain Mashrafe Mortaza and BCB president Nazmul Hassan.
Although the final decision came on Friday afternoon, the meeting had been arranged a day earlier. Mashrafe, who is also a member of parliament, initiated the process by speaking to the Prime Minister, seeking her intervention in the matter. Until that point, Tamim had refused to discuss his retirement with Nazmul Hassan.

Tamim Iqbal Reverses Retirement Decision: Tamim had initially announced his retirement on Thursday afternoon, delivering a 13-minute emotional monologue that garnered widespread attention through live TV and social media. However, a transformed Tamim faced the media on Friday evening outside the Prime Minister’s residence, where he revealed that he had been granted a six-week break to recover from his injuries.
“The honorable Prime Minister invited me to her residence this afternoon,” Tamim stated. “We had an extensive discussion, during which she advised me to return to cricket. Therefore, I am withdrawing my retirement decision.”
“I may decline requests from anyone else, but I cannot turn down the most important person in the country. Mashrafe contacted me, and Papon [Hassan] was also present. They were significant factors in my reversal. Additionally, the Prime Minister has granted me a one-and-a-half-month break. I will utilize this time for treatment and prepare myself physically and mentally to resume playing cricket.”

Nazmul Hassan expressed his relief at the resolution, mentioning, “After witnessing his press conference on Thursday, it was evident that he made an emotional decision. I was confident that if we could engage in a face-to-face conversation, we could find a solution.”
“We met with him through the Prime Minister, and as you have heard, he has withdrawn his retirement letter. He is not retired. He will take a six-week break to undergo rehabilitation and regain his physical and mental fitness. He will soon return to cricket.”
Tamim will not participate in the remaining matches against Afghanistan as he had retired after leading Bangladesh in the first ODI. Litton Das has been appointed captain for the upcoming matches scheduled for July 8 and 11.
