Virat Kohli Scored His First ODI Century On This Day 15 Years Ago; Now, He Has The Most Centuries In The Format In History

Virat Kohli Scored 1st ODI 100 On This Day: Today is December 24, 2024. On this exact date in 2009, Virat Kohli scored the first century of his international career for the Indian cricket team in ODIs. Now, 15 years on, he is the most successful batter in the history of ODI cricket.

Kohli needs no introduction. Arguably the greatest batsman of this generation and certainly the greatest Indian batter of the 21st century (Sachin Tendulkar was great across the 20th and 21st centuries).

The former Indian captain has over 27,000 runs in international cricket, won the T20 and the ODI World Cup, is a Champions Trophy winner, scored over 1000 runs in ODIs and Tests separately on several occasions, and has been the top-ranked batter in the world for a long time.

But this was not the case in 2009. Back then, he was a 21-year-old batter from Delhi with much potential but not much to show for it. The previous year, he had won the U-19 World Cup as the Indian captain and had been a domestic cricket standout.

Despite not being much liked by his fellow cricketers by his own admission, there was undeniable talent in that loudmouth Delhi batter.

On December 24, 2009, India took on Sri Lanka in the fourth match of a five-ODI series between the two nations. The match was being played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Kohli was just 13 matches deep in his ODI career. So far, he had scored three 50s in this format, including a 54-run inning in just the previous match of this series.

Sri Lanka batted first on that day and put up a fine total of 315/6 in 50 overs thanks to a century by Upal Tharanga and 60 runs by Kumar Sangakkara. Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra took two wickets each.

With India having to chase a big total, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar walked out to open the inning. However, Sehwag departed early. And before the fourth over ended and the team at 23, Sachin was dismissed as well.

This brought the duo of Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli to the pitch fairly early. While today, we see them as on-field rivals and now a coach/player pairing, back then, it was just two batters from Delhi; one was a veteran while the other was a newbie to international cricket.

What happened next was incredible; the two stitched together a solid 224-run partnership for the third wicket. Virat Kohli scored 107 runs off 114 deliveries, which was not only his first century in ODIs but his first while representing the Indian Cricket Team.

And while it was Gambhir who was named the Player of the Match that day for scoring an unbeaten 150, he decided to share this award with the person who scored his first ton in international cricket that day.

What followed was probably the best career in ODI cricket for the next decade and a half. Almost 14 years after the first century of the format, on November 15, 2023, Kohli scored a 117 against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in a 2023 Cricket World Cup match, which was his 50th century in ODIs, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record 49 in the format.

Today, not only does Virat Kohli have the most 100s in ODI cricket, but he also has 13,906 runs in 295 ODIs, putting him in third on the all-time list of runs in the format. But unlike Tendulkar and Sangakkara above him on this list, who have over 400 matches and averages in the low 40s, Virat has a massive average of 58.18 in ODI cricket.

‘He can achieve anything he wants’: West Indies Legend Thinks Kohli Can Pass Tendulkar’s Special Record

Clive Lloyd Says Kohli Will Pass Tendulkar: West Indies legend Clive Lloyd recognizes a legend in Virat Kohli. The veteran thinks that Virat Kohli could achieve anything that he wants and would pass the record of Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

Clive Lloyd Says Kohli Will Pass Tendulkar: Context

Virat Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most tons in one-day internationals (49) in the last World Cup with his 50th hundred. Now that he is second in the overall centuries in international cricket with 80 against Tendulkar’s 100, Clive Lloyd was asked at an event in Kolkata if he thinks Kohli will go past the little master’s record.

Clive Lloyd replied that he thinks Kohli can achieve anything he wants considering the way he is playing.

“I do not know about the period, but he is young enough, and I am sure that the way he is playing, he can achieve anything he wants to achieve, and it would be something to be quite happy to achieve,” Lloyd said, as quoted by the Times of India.

    What’s Next For Kohli

Virat Kohli will be playing the second T20I against Afghanistan at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on this Sunday. He didn’t play the first match due to personal reasons

Shami, Kohli, and Iyer Eat Out Kivies to Send India to the WC Final

IND vs NZ ICC CWC 2023 Semifinal Report: Knockout phases in any sport would be the most competitive and toughest to fight in. There could be a lot of reasons for that. It’s a match of death; kill or get killed. And the pressure that builds would definitely hamper the performances many times. Living beyond expectations and rewriting the history book in those games is a mammoth deal, which India did on Wednesday in the first semifinal of the ICC World Cup 2023, when they finished off the business with New Zealand, a sweet revenge for what they underwent four years ago.

Paid the Debt in Full With Interest

In the Game of Thrones in cricket, India turned into Lannister and paid the debt in full. With the most dominant run ever by a side in the ultimate championship, they marched into the final battle, where they will meet the mighty Australia in the field of Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

    Shami’s Seven-for

What a run! Benched for the initial four matches, Shami entered the match pool as a replacement for an injured player. Dominating every batter he faced, he now leads the wicket-takers list with the fewest matches played, adorned with multiple five-wicket hauls. Shami is simply the man. And the man took seven wickets on Wednesday, the most any player has ever bagged in a World Cup.

    When Kohli Became ‘Virat’ Again

Virat Kohli has had a lot of ups and downs in his career. Still, he is one of the most consistent and reliable players India have ever had. His run in this World Cup is the best he has ever had in his career. He has broken many records, and the sweetest one would be the recent one, in the last game, when he became the player who scored the most ODI centuries, overtaking his idol, the Master Blaster. His 50th century (117) along with Shreyas Iyer’s ton (105) took India to the greatest score a team ever made in a World Cup knockout round (397/4). The new sensation, Shubman Gill, was also sensational, scoring 80 runs by keeping his wicket intact till the end.

Technically, not many things went wrong for New Zealand when they started the chase, apart from one man, Mohammed Shami. New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell’s remarkable innings of 134 off 119 provided some nervy moments for India. However, Shami’s exceptional bowling performance, claiming 7 for 57, ensured India’s victory. His double-strike, dismissing Kane Williamson and Tom Latham, proved pivotal, and he emerged as the quickest to 50 wickets in World Cups.

IND vs NZ ICC CWC 2023 Semifinal Report: Score Summary

    India

    397 for 4 (Kohli 117, Iyer 105, Gill 80*, Southee 3-100)

    New Zealand

    India won by 70 runs.

‘Tendulkar’s message is quite special’: Kohli After Levelling Sachin’s ODI Century Record.

Virat Kohli post match interview: Virat Kohli got emotional when he was asked about Sachin Tendulker’s appreciation following the former leveling Tendulker’s record of 49 centuries in the ODI.

“It’s all too much to take in right now. Tendulkar’s message is quite special. For me, it’s all too much to take in right now, to be honest, to equal my hero’s record in one-day internationals is something that’s a huge honor for me. I know that people like comparisons, I am never going to be as good as him.

“There’s a reason why we all looked up to him. He’s perfection when it comes to batting. I am trying to do my best, trying to win games for my country. He’s always going to be my hero regardless of what happens. It’s a very emotional moment for me.

“I know where I come from, the days that I watched him play on TV. So to stand here and get this appreciation from someone like him means a lot to me.”

    Sachin about Kohli

He said that he had a gut feeling that something special would happen today. He also said that, though India had already qualified for the semifinals, he woke up with immense excitement.

“I had this sense of ‘it’s going to be something more,’ today rather than ‘it’s just one more game in the World Cup.’ I did wake up with that excitement.

It was Kohli’s century, along with Ravindra Jadeja’s 5-wicket performance, that helped India destroy a strong South African team. The other specialty of the day for Kohli was his birthday.

“It was a big game,” he said after winning the POM award. “We were probably playing the toughest team in the tournament that we had played so far, to be honest. They played some amazing cricket. There was this motivation of wanting to do well for the team. Because it happened on my birthday, people made it a bit more special for me. I had this sense of ‘it’s going to be something more today’ rather than ‘it’s just one more game in the World Cup’. I did wake up with that excitement, yes.”
