The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to enter the Super 8 round on June 19. Eight teams have been divided into two groups of four each and the top two sides from each group will proceed to the semi-final, which will be played on June 26 and 27, with the final slated for June 29.
The group-stage round of the tournament comprised 40 matches, many of them were exciting, and two of them went to the Super Over.
There were some shocking results—the USA beating Pakistan the biggest of the group round—and the progression of the USA over Pakistan, Afghanistan over New Zealand, and Bangladesh over Sri Lanka has added more excitement heading into the next phase of the competition.
Both the co-hosts are part of the Super 8.
Here are the two groups in the Super 8 round:
Group 1: India, Australia, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh
Group 2: South Africa, England, USA, and West Indies
T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finalists prediction:
Group 1: India and Australia
This would be the common prediction that India and Australia will progress to the semi-final from Group 1. However, one would be a fool to take Afghanistan and Bangladesh lightly in the spin-friendly conditions in the West Indies.
Afghanistan already proved how dangerous they could be in these conditions when they thumped New Zealand, while Bangladesh boasts some experienced batters who could play spin well and have a few talented spinners.
India and Australia, of course, are a cut above these two teams when it comes to experience and quality, and both of the great cricketing nations would be strong favorites to reach the semis. However, this tournament has sparked some unforeseen surprises. So count Afghanistan and Bangladesh out at your own peril.
Group 2: England and West Indies
England started the tournament with a hiccup against Australia but got into their groove in their last two games, albeit against much weaker opponents. The defending champions were in a tough position in their last tournament as well, but their class and T20 nous came to the fore, and they went on to win the title. Jos Buttler’s England side has plenty of match-winners throughout their line-up. Expect them to get through this round.
West Indies won all four of their matches in the group stage with handsome margins. Playing at home, they have a good chance to add a third men’s T20 world title in this tournament. Rovman Powell’s side has all their bases covered right now.
We have picked England and West Indies over South Africa because South Africa’s batting has been too dependent on David Miller, and their entire top-order has struggled so far. Even if their bowlers have been spot on, there is only so far one department that can carry the team.
We are not expecting any more miracles from USA. They already have had a dream run by getting to the Super 8 round. A semi-final spot would be too far-fetched a dream for even the most optimistic of USA supporter.
