Sunil Narine Directly Hits to Run Out Of KL Rahul: With Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) campaign on the line, Sunil Narine produced a proper all-rounder, 3-dimensional display to keep his side alive in the playoffs race by helping KKR thump Delhi Capitals (DC) by 14 runs on Tuesday evening in Delhi.
Apart from shining with both bat (27 off 16) and ball (3/29), Sunil Narine delivered a rare magic moment in the field as well—and quite a significant one—as he ran out KL Rahul, one of DC’s most important and in-form batsmen, with a superb direct hit.
In the chase of 205, DC had started well and scored 58/2 in the powerplay. The hosts were then given a huge jolt when Rahul, who had earlier aced a couple of run chases in the tournament, got run out, courtesy of a terrific direct hit from Narine.
Faf du Plessis softly tapped a ball from left-arm spinner Anukul Roy towards short fine leg. There was a bit of confusion between Faf and the non-striker KL Rahul about the single. Eventually, they went through with it. But that split second wasted in the confusion proved to be decisive, as Rahul was caught just inches short of the crease by Narine’s direct hit on the stumps.

Meanwhile, DC were cruising in the chase even after Rahul’s wicket, as Axar Patel and du Plessis hammered the KKR bowlers, including Narine, who leaked 25 runs in 2.1 overs.
However, the premier KKR spinner bounced back in style as he took out Axar, Faf, and Tristan Stubbs to swing the match KKR’s way. His spin partner Varun Chakravarthy, who also took some tap from the DC batsmen by leaking 31 runs in his first three overs, struck with the wickets of Ashutosh Sharma and Mitchell Starc to help his team’s cause. Eventually, KKR won by 14 runs and now have 9 points in 10 games.
DC, meanwhile, have now lost three of their last four matches. They are still in a good position in the table with 12 points in 10 games.
Bagging the Man of the Match award, Sunil Narine said, “It was a total team effort. The way we started with Gurbaz and then Angki [Raghuvanshi] and Rinku. I still back myself to come back and deliver for the team. There are games you start early and struggle later, and there are games you start late. I enjoyed all wickets, all are crucial. The more wickets you get, the better it is for the team. [Direct hit] Not the greatest fielder. Good to get a run-out. Just pick up and throw the ball as hard as possible!”
