Sunil Gavaskar Senses Aussie Panic After 1st Test: Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes that the Australian Cricket team is in panic mode after the massive loss in the first Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, points out Josh Hazelwood’s mysterious absence from the second Test, and lauds Indian batting.
The first of five Australia vs India Test matches was played in Perth’s Optus Stadium a week ago. On a stadium that is considered a fort for the home side, it was India that won the toss and decided to bat first.
On Day One, the Jasprit Bumrah-led team was bowled out for 150. But in response, the Men in Blue reduced the Aussies to 59/7 by the end of the day. With a 46-run lead in the first inning, India batted for almost two days and declared on 487 as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli scored 100s.
With captain Bumrah on fire in the second inning, he once again led the bowling attack to a brilliant performance, restricting the Kangaroos to 238 and winning the match by 295 runs.
Following the third day of the match, Australian pacer Josh Hazelwood seemed almost distraught, claiming that the batters had to win the team the game against an on-song Indian pace attack.

Sunil Gavaskar, the partial namesake of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In a column for the Sportstar, the legendary batter claimed that the Australian Cricket Team is panicking following the huge loss in the first Test.
“The panic in the Australian ranks is palpable, what with former players calling for heads to be chopped off and some even hinting at cracks in the Australian team after Josh Hazlewood’s media interview at the end of the third day’s play, where he suggested that it was up to the batters to now do something,” he wrote.
‘Sunny G’ continued to point out how, despite looking fine following the first match, Hazelwood is now out of action for the second Test, saying,
“Now, a few days later, Hazlewood is out of the second Test and possibly the series too with a supposed side strain. Strange, that, since nobody had noticed anything wrong with Hazlewood at that media conference. Mystery, mystery—the like of which used to be common in Indian cricket in the past. Now it’s the Aussies, and like old McDonald, I’m simply loving it.”

Finally, the former World Cup winner showered praises on the Indian batting order, who roared back after struggling in the first inning, especially Jaiswal and Kohli, who failed in the first inning only to score tons in the second.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal showed he is a quick learner, as evident by the straightness of his bat at the start of the second innings. As he settled down with wonderful guidance from K.L. Rahul at the other end, one could see the Aussie shoulders sagging at the inevitability of another big hundred from this prodigy. Their heads drooped even more as Virat Kohli cashed in on the solid platform set by the opening pair to get another century in Australia,” Gavaskar added.
The second India vs Australia Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will start on December 6. It will be a day/night match and will be played with the pink ball in the Adelaide Oval.
