Sunil Gavaskar Praises Rahmanullah Gurbaz: All-time batting legend Sunil Gavaskar recently came out and praised the batting of Afghanistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurzah, comparing his style with the bat to that of former Indian captain MS Dhoni.
Gurbaz, who recently featured for the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 2024, will play for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming IPL 2024, where he impressed in his debut season in 2023.
Initially bought by the Gujarat Titans, the 22-year-old was traded to the Knight Riders before the 2023 season. There, he opened the batting for his side in 11 matches. While he did only have an average of just over 20, he scored two half-centuries in the tournament, including a solid 81.
In 2024, KKR has a loaded roster of foreign players, with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine almost locked in for the playing XI, the likes of Jason Roy will compete for the fourth foreigner spot.

But if it were up to Sunil Gavaskar, Gurbaz would get that fourth spot. In a recent appearance on Star Sport, the legend discussed how Rahmanullah Gurbaz is the solution for KKR’s wicketkeeping and batting solutions, he said –
“I have liked Gurbaz’s batting a lot based on whatever I have seen. He is extremely aggressive, and his batting is like a slight copy of MS Dhoni, and that is why I probably like it.”
Gavaskar also discussed how the Afghan layer showed his humane side when he was seen giving money to the homeless in Delhi during the 2023 World Cup and how he was not showing off the kind gesture, and how it also grants him a spot in the playing 11.
“When the World Cup ended, after that, the job he did, he gave money to the people sleeping on the footpath. For doing that, he has to definitely be in the team for me,” said Gavaskar.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz is currently part of the Afghanistan squad touring Sri Lanka. The two sides will play the 3rd ODI of the three-match series on February 14, before playing a three-match T20I series.
