Sunil Gavaskar Calls Mumbai Indians Paper Tigers: Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar criticized the Mumbai Indians following their dismal IPL 2024 season, calling the five-time champions “paper tigers.”
MI had a less-than-ideal 2024 season of the IPL. The team got off to a poor start, and it only got worse as the tournament proceeded. After losing their last league game against the Lucknow Super Giants, their last place in the league table has been cemented.
The blame for the Indians’ poor season falls on many players and incidents. While most blame Hardik Pandya’s captaincy throughout the season, some others blame how some of the team’s biggest names failed to fire consistently throughout the competition.
Mumbai Indians have one of the most high-profile squads in IPL 2024. Four of their players are part of India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup, the most for any team in the IPL.

With so many massive names on the team, most people did not expect them to have such a disappointing tournament.
One man who feels that the Mumbai Indians performed way worse than they should have is Sunil Gavaskar. The Mumbai native has been a critic of this team since the early stages of the competition, voicing his criticism on commentary and social media alike.

Now that MI’s murky season has come to an end, Sunny G let his feelings out for this team to Star Sports, saying,
“They don’t have good players on the team. Mumbai Indians players are paper tigers, and they look strong on paper. Show me a single batter who has performed consistently in the season. You need performers and not big names. Mumbai didn’t show any fight, and that’s why they are 10th in the points table.”
The Mumbai Indians lost their last league game to LSG by 18 runs. Bowling first at their home ground, Wankhede Stadium, MI conceded 218 runs in 20 overs. In response, they only managed to notch up 196.
This is the second time in the last three seasons that MI has finished last in the league table. But it was a little this time. With speculations of unhappy senior players and Rohit Sharma potentially leaving next season, the Mumbai-based franchise’s troubles have not ended with their season.
