Smith, 35, informed his teammates of the decision in the aftermath of the four-wicket defeat, later confirming that he felt it was the right moment to step aside and allow the next generation to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“It has been a great ride, and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said in a statement. “Winning two World Cups was a great highlight, along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey. Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the next cycle, so it feels like the right time to make way.”
Despite stepping away from ODIs, Smith remains committed to Test cricket and the shorter T20 format. His decision to continue in T20 Internationals could be influenced by the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where the T20 format will feature for the first time.
“Test cricket remains a priority, and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies series in the winter, and then taking on England at home,” he added. “I feel I still have a lot to contribute in the longer format.”
Smith leaves behind a distinguished ODI legacy, having played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumphs at the 2015 and 2023 Cricket World Cups. His tactical acumen, impeccable technique, and ability to anchor innings under pressure cemented his reputation as one of the finest modern-day batsmen.
