Stephen Fleming On MS Dhoni Leaving Captaincy: Chennai Super Kings broke the internet yesterday when they announced that Ruturaj Gaikwad will be replacing MS Dhoni as the captain of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024. The team’s head coach Stephen Fleming has now commented on the change.
Fleming has been intrinsically linked with CSK just like MS Dhoni. Like the legendary wicket-keeper who has been the team captain since the first IPL season in 2008, Stephen has been CSK’s head coach since the very first season.
After captaining the Super Kings for over 200 games, DHoni stepped down from captaincy a day before the tournament started as the reigns are now handed to a 27-year-old Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Ahead of a practice session on Thursday, Fleming revealed who made the final call for the captaincy switch.
“MS took the call after much consideration. After last year, when we won the title, he felt that this was the best time,”
he said.
Two years ago, CSK tried replacing MS Dhoni as the captain with Ravindra Jadeja. That experiment failed as the team floundered. So much so that Dhoni was brought back as captain mid-season.
Stephen Fleming also recalled the time Jadeja was made captain in 2022, saying how the upper brass was not ready to let Dhoni leave the leadership position.
“To be honest, the leadership group was not ready for Dhoni to step aside last time around. This year, we will be working very hard to have a leadership plan in place,”
claimed Fleming.
Chennai Super Kings, under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, will kick off the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League when they take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on March 22.
