Despite this being one of the finer batting pitches in this tournament, star batter Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for a duck in the first over of the game. But from this point on, Sri Lanka took hold of their innings.
The next to fall was Kamindu Mendis in the final over of the powerplay. The Lankan crossed the 40-run mark in six overs, a rare feat in this competition.
Kushal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva then formed a fine partnership that scored over 40 runs in the next six overs. By the time both of them got out, Sri Lanka was 123/4 in the 15th over, and Charith Asalanka was wreaking havoc. In fact, almost everyone in Lanka’s middle-order did well.

Asalanka scored 46-off-21 before getting out, while the experienced Angelo Mathews scored 30-in-15, not out. And while Dasun Shanaka was out for a duck, captain Wanindu Hasaranga scored 20 runs in just six balls to take Sri Lanka past 200, finishing their 20 overs at 201/6.
Chasing the massive total, the Netherlands got off to a fine start, scoring 40 runs in just four overs before Max O’Dowd and Michael Levitt lost their wickets in the fifth and sixth overs, just two runs apart from each other.
And this is where the dam broke and the Netherlands’ inning fell apart. Having lost only their openers in the powerplay, they lost their entire top and middle overs before the halfway point, as at the end of the 10th over, the score was 71/6. In order to chase down a massive target, the Netherlands batting order collapsed.
The result of the match was all but confirmed: the Men in Orange limped on scoring runs and losing wickets, losing their last one in the 17th over for 118, losing the game by 83 runs.
For his brilliant inning in the middle order, Charith Asalanka was named the Player of the Match.
After Bangladesh’s win earlier in the day, this was a dead rubber match anyway. This was Sri Lanka’s only win in this tournament, as they will return home disappointed after finishing third in the group. As for the Netherlands, they finished fourth in the group with one win as well.
