Pathum Nissanka and wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis came out to open for the Lankan. The start saw a couple of nice boundaries by the batters, but veteran pacer Taskin Ahmed bowled Medis in the third over of the inning.
While Nissanka held on to one end, Kamindu Mendis walked in and only scored four before being dismissed in the sixth over by Mustafizur Rahman.
Sri Lanka could not form any long partnerships. After scoring a quickfire 47-off-28, Nissanka departed in the ninth over with the score being 70/3. One would assume that from this point, Sri Lanka would accelerate and reach around 150.
But that did not happen, as anyone who came in to bat, from Dhananjaya de Silva to Angelo Matthews, scored lower at a run a ball from here. Captain Wanindu Hasaranga was dismissed for a duck.
The inning fell off an edge in the second half as the Lankan Lions only managed to score 124 in their allotted 20 overs.
Bangladesh’s inning got off to a much worse start, as they lost both their openers within the first two overs for just six runs as Soumya Sarkar and Tanzid Hasan departed for a duck and three respectively.
Before the powerplay ended, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto too was dismissed for just seven.
But from here, Litton Das and Towzid Hridoy stabilised the inning. While Litton scored 36 at less than a run a ball, Towzid complemented that with 40 runs in just 20 balls. And while both lost their wickets just a couple of overs apart from one another, they set up the chase for Bangladesh.
From here, despite the Bangla Tigers losing a few more wickets, they arrived at their destination with six balls and two wickets to spare.
For his spell of 3/22 which broke the back of Sri Lanka’s middle-order, leg-spinner Rishad Hossain was named the Player of the Match.
After two losses in two, Sri Lanka is all but out of the tournament and is at the bottom of Group D. Meanwhile, Bangladesh rose to third behind South Africa and the Netherlands after their first victory in their first match in the competition.
