This proved to be the correct decision, as the West Indies lost the wickets of Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran in the first couple of overs at the hands of Marco Jansen and Aiden Markram.
But from this point, Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase built a fine partnership. The two held onto their wickets with almost a run-a-ball strike rate on this tricky pitch. Taking the team past the 50-run-mark, past 60, and then past 70 in 10 overs.
It was at the total of 86 in the 12th over that the co-hosts lost their third wicket as Mayers was done in by Tabraiz Shamsi. This is also where the collapse of this inning began.
Captain Rovman Powell came in and departed in the very next over. Sherfane Rutherford too couldn’t last one full over as he became Shamsi’s second wicket on a duck. And then, Roston Chase was dismissed soon after reaching his half-century as the West Indies inning lost all its momentum.

Having just reached 100 in the 16th over Andre Russell and Akeal Hosein, unable to accelerate too much, looked to play out the overs. In the 18th over, Russell, who looked like he had started to take it back to the bowlers, was ran out.
As Akeal Hosein lost his wicket at the end of the 18th over, the team was 118/8. A couple of hits by Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie at the end to the team to 125/8 at the end of their 20 over quota.
Despite being a low total, this target was not going to be easy for South Africa by any stretch of the imagination. This proved to be true as, despite some fine early strokes by Quinton de Kock, both he and fellow opener Reeza Hendricks were dismissed by Andre Russell in the second overs, with Reeza being dismissed for a golden duck.
But as soon as the second over ended with de Kock’s wicket, heavy rains showed up as the groundsmen ran in with tarps and covers.
When the players came back on the pitch, the inning had been shortened to 17 overs with 124 being the new target. From this point, South Africa required 108 runs in 15 overs with eight wickets in hand.
With such a low yet tricky target, the Proteas needed someone to anchor the inning. They didn’t find one, but two anchors, as Tristan Stubbs and captain Aiden Markram stabilised the inning after early setbacks and scored at about the required run rate.
While Markram was dismissed in the sixth over, the team had already gone past the 40-run mark. From here, Stubbs stood at one end and saw Heinrich Klassen smash the ball around for 10 deliveries, scoring 22. Then, David Miller struggled for some time before getting dismissed.
By the time Stubbs was dismissed by Chase, South Africa was at 100/6 with 23 runs required in as many balls. And while Keshav Maharaj would lose his wicket as well, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada took the team home with five balls and three wickets to spare.
After England had already qualified for the semi-final after thrashing the USA, this match was a virtual quarter-final, which South Africa won as they finished second in their Super 8 game.
As for this match, Tabraiz Shamsi was named the Player of the Match for his fine spell of 3/27.
