South Africa Coach On Quinton de Kock T20I Status: South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter has revealed he has no clue about the T20I status of one Quinton de Kock, who has not retired from the format despite many assuming that to be the case.
De Kock last played for the South Africa National Cricket Team in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the US and the West Indies. Playing a massive role in taking his team to their first World Cup final, the veteran wicketkeeper-opener was the Proteas highest run scorer in the competition, scoring 243 runs in nine games.
The 31-year-old was not part of the national squad for the recent three-match T20 series against the West Indies following the World Cup, instead representing the Seattle Orcas in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024.
Quinton has already retired from Test and ODI cricket. While he played his last Test back in 20212, his retirement from 50-over cricket came following the semi-final loss against Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
Quinton de Kock is currently playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) for the Barbados Royals. In a recent game against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, he scored a match-winning and unbeaten 87 in 45 deliveries. In fact, he plays franchise cricket all over the world and is a legend in T20 cricket across several leagues.
South Africa Coach On Quinton de Kock T20I Status
But his absence from the South Africa T20I squad, which also includes his omission from the upcoming two T20I series against Ireland, has team coach Rob Walter stumped, as he is unaware of de Kock’s T20I status.
“I don’t know, to be dead honest. For the next little while, there will be no conversations between myself and Quinny as to whether he wants to play for South Africa again. I’ve left the door open for him to approach me if and when he wants to do that. That might never happen. We have to just allow him to have his space to play league cricket and to do what he needs to do. What will become more and more important is performance. He’s not exactly old, so from here on in, it’s a performance-based conversation,” said Walter in a press conference.
With the team now looking forward to the 2026 t20I World Cup, it remains to be seen whether Quinton de Kock remains a part of the squad and if he is even interested in representing South Africa. Is not; players like Reeza Hendricks and Ryan Rickelton are standing in the wings as opening replacements, while Heinrich Klassen has already taken over the wicketkeeping duties across all formats.
