South Africa Champions Trophy 2025 SWOT Analysis
Strengths
The biggest advantage this South Africa Cricket Team has is their form in the past year. From making it to the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup to making it to the World Test Championship final, they have been a true all-format team. And their success in a different format is on the back of players that will be playing in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as well.
This team has a brilliant mixture of upcoming future superstars and veterans in the prime years of their careers. The likes of Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen are still very young, and this tournament could very well be the passing of the baton to their generation by the seniors in the side.
This tournament might also be the last chance for a few players on this side to win a white-ball ICC tournament, as it is difficult to imagine the likes of David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen, however good of a form they are in, playing for the national side for several more years.
Finally, players like Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, and Heinrich Klassen are in the primes of their careers. And so many players of such class hitting their prime on the same team generally brings trophies.

Weaknesses
While many would point towards South Africa’s recent loss in the tri-series against Pakistan and New Zealand as proof of this side’s weakness, one must remember that the squad in the tri-series was very different from the one in the Champions Trophy 2025. But one can highlight how the Proteas also lost the ODI series before that to Pakistan 3-0, which had a very similar squad to CT 2025.
There are also a few concerns regarding the bowling of this side. While there are several superstars here like Kagiso Rabada, the bowlers in this team are also very inconsistent. The likes of Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Tabraiz Shamsi are, on the international level, quite inconsistent in terms of being hit for a lot of runs on any given day.
Opportunities
South Africa is in the “group of death,” Group B, in the Champions Trophy 2025. However, this group might be the easiest out of the two to qualify for the semi-finals. In this group, Australia has not done too well in ODIs as of late and has a lot of their big names excluded from the squad; England has been in dismal white-ball form in recent times; and Afghanistan is the weakest team in this group despite showing a lot of promise. So South Africa might be the best team in their group, which includes heavyweights like the Kangaroos and the Three Lions.
Threats
The biggest threat to this team going into CT 2025 is their inability to win ICC tournaments. Ever since winning the Champions Trophy in 2000, this team has failed to even make it to the final of a tournament, despite being one of the best teams in the world for a lot of that time. In the 2024 T20 World Cup final, South Africa was in the driver’s seat for most of that match, only to give it all away in the final five overs. So, it is this team’s allergy to winning ICC tournaments that is the biggest threat to their chances in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
South Africa expected playing XI:
Temba Bavuma (C), Ryan Rickelton (wk), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi
