Souness Urges Marcus Rashford to Leave United: Former footballer and now pundit of the sport, Graeme Souness, has urged Manchester United superstar Marcus Rashford to leave the club this summer.
Rashford is a United man through and through. He was born and grew up in Manchester. He has been a part of the Red Devils youth setup since he was seven before making his senior team debut in the 2015-16 season.
In the 401 games he has played for Manchester United, the now-26-year-old has scored 131 runs and made 64 assists. In his nine seasons with the team, he has become the face of United, being their generational striker in a time of turmoil.
However, this season has not gone too well. The English forward has scored only seven and assisted four goals in 38 appearances for the club. In fact, he has had only two seasons where he has scored over 20 goals in all competitions.
While no one can question the ability and potential of Marcus Rashford, his time with the club has coincided with their worst patch of form in the last half-century.
Souness Urges Marcus Rashford to Leave United
Souness, who played for Liverpool in the 70s and 80s, recently talked to talkSPORT about Marcus Rashford’s career. The Scotsman recognized how difficult it would be for a local boy to leave his boyhood club, but the circumstances for Marcus Rashford are different.
“Under normal circumstances, you don’t leave Manchester United to go to PSG. He is from Manchester; it is his team, but for his improvement, I think he should leave. He has been on the first team for five years, and he has had two good years,” said Souness.
Rashford has been linked with French champion Paris Saint-Germain for some time now. But English outlet The Sun claims that the Parisians have no actual interest in the Englishman.
Souness continued to talk about Rashford, saying this:
“Why has he had only two good years? You start off. It should be a natural progression. I am not just talking about goalscoring, but his all-round play. It looks like he is an unhappy boy. It looks like he is carrying an enormous weight on his shoulders.”
Manchester United did not have the best 2023–24 season. They finished a lowly eighth in the Premier League, missing European football next season altogether. They were also eliminated in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, finishing last in their group.
United does have a chance to finish this season out with a trophy, as they take on Manchester City in the FA Cup Final on May 25.
