Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to field first. The hosts were off to a terrific start in this game with the ball. Maheesh Theekshana struck with the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second over of India’s innings, trapping the left-hander lbw.
In the next two overs, India lost Sanju Samson for a duck to Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Rinku Singh, who was promoted to number four, to Theekshana.
The biggest blow to India came in the last over of the powerplay as Suryakumar Yadav whipped Asitha Fernando, with not enough power in it, to the deep fine-leg fielder. India ended the powerplay at only 30/4. Shivam Dube didn’t last long either and was dismissed for 13 runs by off-spinner Ramesh Mendis, edging to wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis.
Then, India’s innings got some boost with a half-century stand between Riyan Parag and opener Shubman Gill. Parag was the aggressor in this partnership, scoring 26 runs off 17 balls, which included a couple of sixes off Wanindu Hasaranga.
Gill was steady and scored 39(37). Before Gill could launch some boundaries, he was dismissed in the 16th over by Hasaranga, stumped after missing the ball after skipping down the pitch. In the same over, Parag was gone too, caught at deep mid-wicket while aiming for a maximum.
Washington Sundar, playing his first match of the series, gave India some heft toward the end of the innings with his knock of 25 (15), stroking two fours and a six. Sundar’s innings helped India to a total of 137.
