After two massively successful seasons after coming into existence in 2022, the Gujarat Titans had a difficult follow-up in their third. After captain Hardik Pandya left, the team could not keep up their performances and fell right out of title contention.
Under the new IPl 2025 retention rules, teams can retain up to six players, five of whom can be capped. There is no limit to overseas players in capped retentions. Teams can also retain a maximum of two uncapped players. It should also be noted that if a team does not use up all of its retention slots, they can use Right To Match (RTM) for one of their players in the auction. This also means that multiple players in this list can instead be retained via RTM.
Looking to enter right into title contention once again, the Gujarat Titans have a lot of work to do in the 2025 auction. Well, more than most teams.
Here are six players that Gujarat Titans should retain for IPL 2025.
Six Players That Gujarat Titans Should Retain
1) Shubman Gill – 18 Crore
The ‘Prince’ of Indian cricket might have been a little inconsistent for the national team over the last year, but he remains one of the best batsmen in the IPL and is on a path similar to Virat Kohli in the league. Despite 2024 being his worst statistical season in the league since 2019, he scored 426 in 12 games with an average of 38 and a strike rate of 147. So he was still one of the best in the league.
Now the captain of the Gujarat Titans, Gill is a part of the latest trend in the IPL, appointing the team’s young and promising Indian batter as the captain. No less than seven teams in the league have done so over the last few years.
Shubman had one of the best seasons ever in the history of the IPL in 2023. He scored a whopping 890 runs that season with an average of about 60 and a strike rate of 157. Only a handful of players in the world even have the ability to do that, making Shubman Gill one of the best batsmen in the world. He has also scored the most runs for the Titans franchise, scoring 1799 runs in three seasons.
2) Mohammed Shami – 14 Crore
Mohammed Shami is the best bowler in the world in his day. Having played only two seasons for the Gujarat Titans, Mohammed Shami has taken 33 wickets for them. He even won the Purple Cap in 2023.
GT sorely missed Shami in 2024. As the side finished outside the playoff spots, they were missing their ace pacer. The UP-based has been out of action since late 2023. In his last tournament before being out with an injury, Shami had one of the best World Cup campaigns for a cricketer, taking 24 wickets in just seven games with an average of 10.7.
One of the best fast bowlers in the world, Mohammed Shami, will surely be retained by the Gujarat Titans. Not doing so will be one of the biggest mistakes the franchise can make.

3) Sai Sudharsan – 11 Crore
Yet another promising young Indian batter, Sai Sudharsan, has been hovering around the national team and has been absolutely dominant on the domestic circuit. Sai was the highest run scorer of the franchise during difficult times in 2024.
Not only is the Chennai-bon all-rounder an explosive yet reliable top-order batter, but he can even bowl a few overs here and there. With a complete T20 package, Sai can give his team a fabulous start like no one else can.
Not only is Sai Sudharsan a promising run scorer, but he has also shown an ability to perform under pressure. In the final of IPL 2023, the youngster scored 96 runs in 47 deliveries. While GT lost that game, Sai came out to bat first, and his inning only kept his team in the match for the whole way through.
4) Rashid Khan – 18 Crore
The best bowler in the world, full stop. Rashid Khan emerged from the trenches of the unknown Afghanistan cricket program as a teenager about a decade ago. Still in his mid-20s, Rashid has been the best wrist spinner in the world for a while now.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s biggest mistake in franchise history was to let Rashid Khan go in 2022, something the Gujarat Titans better not repeat. It is not even necessary to spout out Khan’s stats to relay how great he is. One of the highest wicket-takers in league history, Rashid has some of the best economies and averages in the league.
Rashid Khan also brings tons of experience, leadership qualities, and some fine lower-order batting with him. Was he not a big enough matchwinner that he had to start winning matches with the bat as well?
5) Rahul Tewatia (Uncapped) – 4 Crore
If the word ‘match-winner’ was in the dictionary, it would have Rahul Tewatia’s picture in an IPL jersey in front of him. An absolute match-winner for the Titans, Tewatia has been an absolute saver for this team with the bat for three seasons now, winning matches for the team in situations where others would have given up.
Rahul was a wrist-spinner at first, but his attacking abilities with the bat have resulted in him being used as a middle-order batsman more nowadays.
While Rahul Tewatia has been picked for the national team in the past, he has not played a match in the Indian jersey, which keeps his status as an uncapped player.
6) Shahrukh Khan (Uncapped) – 4 Crore
Shahrukh Khan plays a similar role in any team that Rahul Tewatia plays for the Titans. A lower-middle-order batter who can hit a few sixes in the death overs to win his team the match and who can also bowl a few overs of spin throughout the match.
While an investment in Shahrukh is yet to pay off for the Gujarat Titans, he has shown in leagues like the TNPL and also in the IPL in the past that he is one of the finest sloggers in T20 cricket in India. And for that skill set, teams will pay a lot of money for him. So locking him down for Rs. 4 crore would be smart business.
