Six Players Mumbai Indians Should Retain: Mumbai Indians had a tumultuous 2024 IPl season. Despite a team filled with superstars, the controversy around Hardik Pandya becoming the new captain compounded into several issues with the team, resulting in them finishing 10th on the table.
Under the new retention rules for IPL 2025, teams can retain up to six players, only five of which can be capped while a maximum of two can be uncapped. There is no limit to overseas players.
Today, we will look at the players the Mumbai Indians should retain. The joint-most successful team in IPL history will be looking to commence a new era of success, having not won a title since 2020.
It must be noted that this list will not include Rohit Sharma. Multiple reports suggest that the six-time IPl winner will be looking to change his team. If he is retained by MI, he will most likely be in one of the Rs 18 crore spots. But as of now, we believe he will be going into the auction.
Here are six players that Mumbai Indians should retain for IPL 2025.
Six Players Mumbai Indians Should Retain
1) Hardik Pandya – 18 Crore
The team captain was brought into the side amid much upheaval. It would be an understatement that the Mumbai Indians fans did not appreciate that Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as the team captain in 2024. Reports suggest that this decision created a tiff on the side and led to the team being divided.
Despite that, it seems that Pandya is here to stay. MI has hitched their horses to the all-rounder. One must not forget that Hardik is still one of the best limited-overs all-rounders in the world and a proven IPL captain who won the league with the Gujarat Titans in 2022.
With the Hitman era in Mumbai seemingly coming to an end, it remains to be seen whether Hardik Pandya can take them into a new era of success.
2) Suryakumar Yadav – 14 Crore
Suryakumar Yadav is one of the best T20 batters in the world. Not only was he the No. 1 ranked T20I batter in the world for a long time, but he has also performed countless times for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
SKY has been MI’s highest run scorer on multiple occasions and is the current T20I captain of India. He also played a major role in India winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. While he played a few good innings in that tournament, it was his boundary line catch of David Miller in the last over of the final that was arguably the greatest moment in World Cup history.
Suryakumar Yadav will be one of the highest-paid players of all time if he enters the auction. But he is likely to be an MI player for the rest of his career, a career that still has a few good years left.
3) Tilak Varma – 11 Crore
Tilak Varma is one of the most promising young names to have come out of IIPL and Indian cricket in the past few years. A destructive middle-order batter who can single-handedly win a team the match. Varma is also a handy spin bowler who can provide a few overs here and there.
In his three years of playing IPL, Tilak has scored over 1100 runs for MI with a strike rate of 148.33 and an average of almost 40. He was also a shining beacon in an otherwise dull season for the Indians in 2024.
Tilak Varma is MI’s young Indian batter who plays for the national team, a player that each franchise seems to have and is keen on retaining.
4) Jasprit Bumrah – 18 Crore
It is said that Jasprit Bumrah deserves to be the highest-paid player in the IPL. And frankly, what’s wrong with that? One of… no… the best pace bowler in the world has been a beast for MI and India for about a decade now. The best bowler in the world was the best player in IPL 2024. In a sea of 200+ scores and 10+ economies, Jasprit had an economy below seven throughout the season.
In the 2024 T20 World Cup, he arguably had the best World Cup performance by an Indian and even turned the final in favour of India.
Jasprit Bumrah is the kind of player that a team should never release. This means that he will be a Mumbai Indians player for life, akin to what Virat Kohli has been for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
5) Ishan Kishan – 14 Crore
A young Indian wicketkeeper and explosive batter from Bihar, Ishan Kishan has been compared to MS Dhoni for much of his career. And while he might not have proven the comparisons true as of yet, anyone can see that Kishan has the ability to be one of the best keeper-batters in world cricket.
The 26-year-old might have fallen out of favour for the national team, but he usually performs for MI. A consistent middle-order presence for the side for years now, Ishan has the ability to win about 2-4 matches a season on his own. What else can a team expect from a player? He will also be looking to make his way back into the Indian Cricket Team by having a phenomenal IPL season.
6) Nehal Wadehra (Uncapped) – 4 Crore
There are several uncapped players that MI can retain. Pacer Akash Madhwal has shown in the past that he can be a regular pacer on an IPL team. But a young and explosive Indian all-rounder is someone that any team would like to have.
Wadhera might not have been in form in the 2024 season, but he splashed onto the scene in 2023 for the Mumbai Indians as a proper finisher. He can also bowl an over or two matches. But the major reason MI should retain Nehal Wadhera is that he can become a part of the team’s Indian core in the future.
